1974 350 engine questions

i just picked up a 1974 350 engine out of a chevy truck. the engine is complete, no cracks in the block or heads, was running when it was pulled out. im going to go with a 355 engine build. my question is what can be done with these stock heads?? are they worth messing with or should i just buy some news ones?? im looking for about 425 hp out of this engine. also what would be a good cam selection either with those heads done or with some new ones. i would like to stay with running 93 octane. thanks for any replies!

This really depends on what casting they are? But usually the trucks did not get the "good heads". There are some reasonably priced aluminum heads out there, and some very good cast ones for less. Post the casting numbers, you might get lucky.

Chances are the stock heads are worth crap. You'll be much happier in the long run with a new set cast or aluminum heads.

I have a set of AFR 195's and it made 450hp and 450tq

those heads are more than likely 882's(boat anchors),by the time you get those reworked you could spend a little more money and have a much better head that is new and will flow circles around an 882.

yeah i wish the guy who built my engine knew that. Ive got a 74 engine too, and he left the stock 882 heads on there and just put new valves and valve seals in. USELESS!!!! now i gotta save up like 1400 so i can get some AFRs oh well. DITCH THE STOCK HEADS!!!

Edelbrock E-Tec heads in 170cc and 200cc, both for under $600/head; fully assembled. They also have a polished version for slightly more. Very underappreciated head... good value, smart buy. Make some good power too...

...Or if you want to go even cheaper, buy a set of Vortec Heads. They come with 1.94/1.50 valves, LT1 style ports, 64cc Chambers, and the springs are good up to .480 lift. You can even get an upgraded set from places like Scroggins-Dickey or Pace, with 2.02/1.60 valves and bigger springs.

Remember, you'll need an intake manifold made for Vortec/E-Tec heads.
