1969 Camaro: newbie needs help/advice

I just bought a 69 Camaro what advice can you give me I've been talk'n 2 alot of people and everyones got there own opinion. First of all it's just a roll'n chasis has no motor/tranny,all the body is straight no rust just been painted. Some ppl say put in a small block 383 others say big 454 and others say Ls2 So I know your question "what am I looking for?" I would like to and stop light burner yet a car that you can drive 1000 miles not overheat, pretty much a street cruiser that I can take to the track every now and then. Yet still have the family jump in take a cruise to the winery and so on.(not radical head banger) Was leaning towards 383 with a 700 r4 373 rears??? or Ls2 but worried about how complicated it would be to put it in? All the older guys say no to it but they also wouldn't like what I really wanna do is put maybe some 20's or 22's on rear and 18's/20's front what tire sizes and do I have to tub it? Really didn't want to cut it, my car is completely empty so where do I start "painless wiring"? Has all interior but needs to be restored also previous owner took drums off the front to install disc brakes. Also want to install A/C. Need help did I join the right site or need to check out others any help? Thanks you can pm also.

what your describing i would def go with a lsx. maybe a ls6 i no they came in the chevelle but when someone ask whats in it you say ls6 there gonna think 454 but it would be cool to pop the hood and show them.you could drive it any where and get good gas mileage and a cam swap would net you plenty of power.

We have a forum here for the classic cars like yours where you might get more help.

I'll move it there.

This question is begging for more info. The biggest are: what are your goals and what is your budget?

I'm goin with the Ls2 prob port the heads and put a cam in it. There's really NO price tag you can put on your dream car if you don't have enough you have 2 wait work overtime or whatever! Chip away at it long as your goin in right direction!!! I want something that NO 327,355,383,396,454 can f--k wit! I want a C5 just with a Camaro body!!! After I get her all done then I may even put a turbo/SUPER charge her Just need 2 be steered in the right direction... Im gonna start by finding this kit er body is telling me about haven't found it yet. Engine mount? Cradle? spose 2 move the motor foward 3 inches off the firewall so there's no fab work. Then on 2 four wheel disc brakes if your gonna make her go you need 2 make her STOP!!! Wanna have a nice ride with A/C and 4-500++ HP... I think I'm gonna have 2 join another site not getting alot of answers here just questions Hek I thought I was asking all the questions yet I'm giving more answers but its cool will share as I find out

The LS3/L92 is a better place to start. The max bore is bigger.

GM publishes on book on swapping LS motors into older cars - quite useful.

Easiest way is to find a wrecked car from which you can get an engine, tranny, and PCM with sensors! Can be very expensive/time consuming/frustrating to find all the "little" parts and the engine mangement is a major decision, assuming you are going EFI.

Check out http://www.camaros.net several folks there have already done similar swaps and may be able to offer up some good tips and what to watch out for.

FWIW, if you're going LSx, there are several vendors out there that offer bolt in subframes to replace the stock unit so the LSx will drop right in.

My advice would be to start pricing specific lsx in a first gen swap parts first before making any big purchases. The small things appear to ad up very quickly. I have a 67 that I was going to do lsx swap in but I have done alot of research and have decided against it. I like the old school clean engine bay look not all the wiring, computer, clutter, etc that comes with efi. I am going big block.I think i can get more power for less money by shopping around, but also less gas mileage, but its a weekend toy. This site may be a little lsx bias though. Just my opinion

Your solution is the way I would go unless I was ready to spend big bucks.

LS all the way. No question.

As for the wheels, you can go with a 9.5" wide wheel in the rear and an 8" wide in the front. Make the rear backspacing 5.5" and the front backspacing at 4.75" and you're good to go. I wouldn't go as big as 20's, but that's just me.

I would skip painless wiring and go straight to AAW's Classic Update wiring kit. It's a great product, extremely complete and well thought out.

For more info, there's tons of 1st Gen LS swap info, as well as suspension and brake upgrades/swaps here: www.lateral-g.net/forums
