XM antenna
XM antenna
I'm sure many people here would agree that mounting a satelite radio antenna to the roof or somewhere on the exterior of the car takes away from the over all look. I like all the new technology and stuff but i'm the kind of person that wants it look like it could have come from the factory like it is. I want to hide the antenna and i read that some people have had success with mounting the antenna in the engine compartment when they have fiberglass hoods. I was thinking about mounting one to the inner side of one of the front fenders since I don't have a fiberglass hood. I know the fender isn't fiberglass but it's not metal either.
Anyone try this before, any success?

Re: XM antenna
well the top of my car is fiberglass im assuming since the magnetic antennae doesnt stick to it.
i actually positioned my antennae at the very front of the dash. the whole part of the dash top just pops straight up.. i ran the wire underneath it and used double sided tape to put it at the end of the dash. works very well. yes you do have to see the sat. antennae as you are driving but really its just an antennae not really a big deal. plus all my passengers ask wtf is that thing and i tell them i got XM and they are like.. ooooo ahhhh.
ill have to take a picture cuase i have a feeling this will come up quite often.

Re: XM antenna
Well I went and picked up a tuner and adapter for my headunit yesterday morning from a local car audio place. Bargained with them and got a pretty good deal. Install was pretty basic. Mounted the tuner and adapter on either side of the radio inside the dash with adhesive backed velcro. The only somewhat challenging part was mounting the antenna. Yesterday I drove around with the antenna on the end of the dash board where I think nervekiler has his mounted. It got static everytime I drove under an overpass. It was raining and was pretty cloudy so maybe that has some effect on the signal also, i'm not sure.
I mounted the antenna inside the spoiler on my TA. I ended up having to take it off in order to fish the wire in but it wasn't too bad, it's only held on by 8 nuts. Took about an hour or so to mount it. Perfect reception so far, even under the overpasses.

Re: XM antenna
Yea, overpasses are bad for sat signal. My g/f has sirius in her car, and MOST underpasses don't mess with it, but some larger, heavier interstate overpasses give her a half a second or so of " acquiring signal " but nothing more. I like the spoiler mounting idea... but i have a fiberglass hood so that's where mine will go :P
