i know the one on the back goes to the battery...but the ones on the clip/ plug...where do they go to. I am fitting a late model alternator into a project car...i need to know where these wires go to.
thanks for any info

Big, fat lug is for the 8-gage wire to feed the battery.
Then there is a wire that comes from the instrument panel of the car, through an ALT lamp. This is the coil excitation wire. It's needed to get the alternator to actually start putting out charge.
Then there is the SENSE wire. This gets attached to the positive terminal at the point where you want the regulated voltage to show up: i.e. there are voltage drops in the automotive system, and the wire attachment point determines the physical location where voltage is regulated. It's usually attached to the main power distribution block but you can attach it to the battery terminal if you want.

could someone decode the COLORS of these wires. which wires should go where. obviously this car has no ECU. so it sounds like one wire goes back to the batter positive terminal, and one to the dash? (the exciter wire)...
any ideas?
i wanna retro fit this alternator into a 1953 olds.
thanks
