Post What materials to use for box and amp racks?

I was wondering what you guys use to make your boxes and amp racks. I've seem 1/2" MDF posted before and I was wondering if this was the standard? Where do you buy it? Also where do you get the carpet? Is it different than regular home carpet?

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

1/2" mdf is not really the standard for boxes. I use it for some of my stuff, but mostly for amp racks. I like it a lot for that purpose. Great for sinking amp mounting screws into.

For boxes, 3/4" is pretty much the standard. High-end boxes sometimes use a 1" baffle though. Lowes used to carry both 1/2" and 3/4", but my local store quit handling the 1/2" (p'd me off too). You can also find it at Home Depot. Less expensive there anyway. There's about 20 home depot stores in indy so you should be able to find what you want.

Box carpet is way different from house carpet. You can find it at stereo shops, upholstry shops, and online. I know crutchfield and sounddomain have it. But it's hard to match from the pics on their sites. And a little overpriced IMO. I believe parts express even carries box carpet.

If you're trying to match something, you're better off to have a sample in your hand to campare to what you're trying to match. Guessing sucks The upholstry shop I deal with has several books of carpet and vinyl samples that I go thru to help match things. Works well. I can send you samples if you want to get some from me. I've been able to match pretty much all the interior materials in f-bods.

Steve,

Thanks alot. I was acutally at Home Depot looking at their MDF boards and I only saw huge sheets of the stuff, I'm assuming that they will cut it down, but that is the answer I was looking for.

I might be interested in getting some carpet from you. Shoot me an email, if you don't mind, with a price to jcatellier@yahoo.com. I havn't measured or made any designs, but I'm going to work on that this weekend and I'll know how much I need.

Jeff

Yes,

Home Depot and Lowes will cut the stuff for you. As long as their saw is working Lol. A 4'x8' sheet of 3/4" mdf weighs 80-100 lbs. Have them cut it in half or thirds so you can haul and handle it.
