Question What gage wire to use?

I'm needing some bigger wire to hook from my new amp to the box and the wire inside the box. Right now i've got 16 gage wire doing that job with only 50 watts RMS. Now I'm not a genius but I know that 16 gage wire wouldn't work with 1200w RMS or even 600w RMS.

What gage wire should I go for to connect my amp to the sub box and the wire inside the box and where to buy it?

I have 4 gauge wire (Monster cable) running to my trunk to a distribution block and then 2 (8) gauge wire going to each of my 2 rockford amps.

The first RF amp power the speakers in the car 50WattsX4 RMS
The Second RF amp powers my JL Sub 400 Watts Rms

and it works real well with the 4 gauge wire sending power to everything. You can get the 4 gauge wire at any good Car Audio Store or I think Even Best Buy has em....I have even seen the same cable forsale in some Pep Boys.

Hope that helps,
Claude

Actually Silver TA, I think Killer is asking about the wiring for just the subs. Is that correct Killer? 12AWG is WAY MORE then enough for you. 14AWG would be good, but not many places sell it believe it or not. It's MUCH easier to find 12 or 16 though. I would just go to a local store to get your wire. It's not really enough money to be saved by ordering on-line. Once you add in shipping.... damn near the same price. But don't pay more then about 40cents per foot for 12AWG.

Hey, if you really wanted to order on-line. And wanted some extra wire.....check out these deals

Also, just to double check, you've already upgraded your wire to your battery correct? Just making sure!

Oh yea....4 gage all the way. Sure 12 gage can carry all that power? This JBL BP1200.1 amp can dish out 1200w RMS which I don't know if i'll use it all. I know its not that bad cuz its a short distance but still? How do I connect a big gage wire to the lil' tabs inside the box? All the things I know of are for small wire.

12AWG is more then enough. Yes, for 1200W RMS. I think 12awg will fit in a wiring cup. (cup on the side of box) Can you take the cup out of the box? Take it with you when you shop for wire.

Ok thanks...I'm pretty sure 12AWG can fit the wiring cup(on the outside). I've only had one box and has lil' + & - tabs on the inside. The connectors that go on the wire and slip on the tabs only work for small gage wire or so i've seen...I've got 16 AWG to fit. Can I sodder it on?
