What could have possibly gone wrong?

My terrible is set directly in the middle. My bass is on level 8 of 15 most of the time, and the base "type" on my Alpine is set at 1, which in the instruction booklet said would be the best setting for my car if i had subwoofers. Ever since getting rid of my POS Sony Xplod, and going to the "superior" Alpine, i get nothing but ****ty sound quality, lack of bass, and toooo much trebble. It's really making me mad. Someone help me diagnose this problem.

If what he said doesnt help, buy a pre-amp line level converter and wire it inl ine with your rear speakers. That way you can adjust it even further.

Some head units just dont have enough output in the pre-amps without a little help.
