Question trouble deciding sub size

I'm having a little trouble deciding. The sub(s) will be put into stealth boxes. Now with the choices:
1) 12" and 10"
2) Just a 12" or 10"
3) 2 10's

I listen to mostly rock and rap, so I don't want crazy amounts of bass that would make anything besides rap sound awful. I don't have the speakers that came stock in the trunk either, so as of now I have almost no bass

I'd go with two 10's

Size of the speaker usually determines how low it will hit, ie, 25Hz. Power determines how loud it will be. Do you like really low bass?

yeah, I like really low bass, but will my system sound uneven with a 12" on one side and a 10" on the other??

This is not always true... enclosure design determines most of how a speaker sounds.

I have 1 12" in a driver side stealthbox and with the crossover set at 120Hz at 12db cutoff, it sounds pretty good and hits.

I can set it to 80Hz and give it a little extra boost at 45Hz and more gain on the EQ and it has very deep bass and moderate kick.

You can set the 12 to give deep bass and the 10 to give bass from 100-250Hz if want it to hit hard.

I prefer deep bass and even kick so it all depends on what you want to hear.

It's never a good idea to mix and match subs like this. Richard Clark did an article on this several years ago. He even showed that in some cases you can end up having cancellation.

Wow, thats good to know, I don't think that many people know about this. I hear of people mixing and matching all the time.

I went with two Fosgate 12s, a Fosgate 301m amp and this custom box>>> http://www.subthump.com/images/subthumpboxes/ta01.jpg

The picture is hard to see the t-top opening up front , but it has a spot for storing them. Also a custom amp rack is underneath.

Yeah I looked at the t-top box but I need the trunk space so the stealth box seems to fit me right. How do the two fosgate's sound?

They hit 148 db last week.
Now keep in mind that this is just bass line. I still have my factory stereo system (monsoon)
I love the depth that the two 12s give. Im sure you will be happy with one 12 though. I recommend anyone to go with Fosgate. They are awesome.

Let us know how you decide.

Mike

I'm thinking of putting the sub enclosure in the driver's rear corner. My question is are these enclosures as good as a custom built fiberglass enclosure? A custom fiberglass enclosure in Canada cost 4 or 5 hundred canadian dollars, that's about 3-375 US price range. These ones at subthump are only $112.00 US, about $150.00 canadian. If they sound similar my choice is obvious.

Steve,
I really dont know because I have never went the fiberglass route. So It wouldnt be right for me to say one way or the other.

You may want to go click on subthump link and ask the owner whos name is Steve also. Email him and he will shoot you straight. If the fiberglass box is better then he will tell you.

Later
