Thinking about installing my own remote start, suggestions?

Hello all, I had a remote start/keyless entry system installed on my previous car, and would also like to install it on my current car, 93 Z28. It has power locks, so I know the keyless entry is going to be OK. Its also an A4, so no issues there either.

Has anyone installed this type of system themselves, and how difficult was it? Anyone have any tips before I try and do this myself? I am an electrnoics tech, and have a degree in electronics, so this type of thing doesnt really jump out and scare me. My main concern is doing the job right and not harming my car. I was also wanting some suggestions for doing this install for under $150. If it is at all possible, I wouldnt mind having an alarm as well, but only if that is in the budget. I understand I would be better off doing the keyless, start, and possible alarm all at the same time to avoid confusion.

So, anyone got and guides for 4th gens or any brand specific recommendations? Should I just pay someone to do this, or is it really not as difficult as everyone suggests it is? Thanks for any input.

I installed auto start on my first car a long time ago, a chev cavalier, I would not do it again, it is pretty messy with a lot of wires to connect. I would rather pay someone than do it again. Installing an amp is one thing, but an alarm with autostart is a whole new ball of wax.

Pay somebody. The guys that always claim to have electronics degrees seem to butcher their cars the most. That aside, 4th gens are pretty easy, some wires are pretty tricky to get to. So here's the wiring for it, and have fun with those 5 wire locks, they are a bitch and a half...

the camaro isn't the hardest, yet not the easiest car to do. it's straight forward until you get to the 5 wire locks (pass kick) and the relay for hatch pop. it'll take you about a 12 pack.

they are not very easy to do and i would not reccomend attempting it unless you have at least some electrical backround, and i dont mean that you hooked up some speakers once. it will take a long time and if you screw something up alot of harm can be done

Re: Thinking about installing my own remote start, suggestions?

installing an alarm isn't that hard. you just have to take your time and make sure you follow the instructions to the letter and disconnect the battery. My first install I forgot that step and when I went to hook up the remote start and starter kill I burnt a hole through my knife when I cut the ignition wire and blew a 60amp waffle fuse. Google and this site are more than enough to get anyone through the install. Getting past the passkey is super easy. Get out the ol dvom and set it to ohms and see what pellet you have. Gm had only 15 I think. When you find the ohms go to radio shack and get a resistor to match your key and you can plug it in the harness behind the key cylinder. Cost like 20 cents which beats the 60 dollar module. The hardest part about installing an alarm on these cars is the bcm shuts down power to every thing so you have to wake it up for door locks and window roll up. If you are looking at installing an alarm I say if you have a couple of days to fool around then go for.

Not to beat a dead horse here but the previous owner of my 94 z half *** attempted to install one of these in my car and it has caused a ton of problems due to his inability to take his time and finish the job completely. hardly any of my power accessories work right now and im still trying to get it straightened up....just my .02....
