is there a point to a line driver?
just wondering...is there any point in getting a line driver for my setup. My HU output is 2.2v but the RCA length is like 3 feet. I don't think it'll make any difference since the RCA is so short
The biggest impact you'll see by using a line driver is less induced noise through the RCAs. Boosting the input voltage to the amp will allow you to turn the gain down and still get the same power out. Of course if you left the gain where it was, you'd get more power out. But it would be HEAVILY clipped. Another bonus feature: it's a great way to hook multiple amps to one RCA output from the h/u. Let's say you are running 6 subwoofers each powered by their own amp. But your deck only has one non-fading subout. Instead of using a cr@p load of Y-splitters you could buy a line driver with like 10 outputs. Presto. Unless you are having noise problems... then I say put that money towards something else. If you are in the market for an external line driver may I suggest http://www.rwaudio.com/ ? But since we drive f-bodies with the 1.5din console, check out a .5 din EQ with a built in line driver. Audiocontrol makes some sweet ones, but if you really wanna go this route, I suggest the Arc Audio EQ's which have up to 9V RMS (Yes! RMS!) outputs. But watch out! That's more then many amps can handle with the gain on min.!!!!
Before, I was considering the Image Dynamics line driver. At the moment, I'm considering either a Audiobahn or Phoenix Gold. I'm in the middle of planning out my system right now so I'm trying to see any kind of improvements that I can make. I'm actually going to the audio shop tomorrow and prolly sample the Clarion center channel and see if it will be good enough for my system. On the good side, I've already got my sub picked out, Image Dynamics!!! yeah!!!
Everything firebirdude said was right. I like Audio Control, they make great products. Are you getting the IDMax? I've been considering that behemoth myself. I'm trying to decide between:
JBL GTi 12"
12W7
eD 12A
IDMax
They have so many big boys nowadays, it's a chore deciding what to go with

Where's Adire Audio in the mix? Out of the four mentioned, I'd go with the W7. Yeah it's a little more expensive then the EDa or IDMAX, but it's worth every penny.
