Question Sub Question

I know yall are probably getting tired of sub questions, and there have been similar posts to this, but i have to ask, what is the best sub to get? I only want 1 10in., but i want it to be loud, have clear bass, and have overall good SQ. Also give me some personaly expirences on what you've heard and what sounded the best and what amps to power them with. Im kinda looking at the Alpine Type R, or Infinity Perfects, but could change my mind easily with all the opinions you guys have. Thanks for the help!

I started out with a JL Audio 10W3 D4 in a Vantage Stealthbox. The amp is an MTX Thunder 6500D. I just switched to an Alpine Type-S a few months ago and I like it much better than the 10W3. The 10W3 is a good sub but the Type-S is a better match for the .6 cubic feet of volume inside the Stealthbox. To my ears the Type-S hits harder, plays louder, seems to go lower and has a much better overall bass sound than the JL sub did.

I'll put my vote in for the Infinity Kappa Perfect subs. I have 2 12"s and these things hit hard and clear. I've pounded these things and they just kick back with no distortion. Just my .02 cents.

I guess that depends on how much you want to spend, but in general I'm gonna vote for the Alpine Type R. They do indeed work well in small sealed enclosers and can get very loud as well.

exactly what he said it depends how much money you want to fork over, and just some advice you probably wont get much bass
from 1 10" . But there is a new company out there, they are called
Memphis audio there subs are bada** ,expensive but believe me nothing sounds better except maybe focal. If your low on cash go with diamond audio the sub is called mac daddy, the name says it all .Hope you find what you want.

Memphis and Diamond both make great products but they are a tad more expensive then either of the previously mentioned subs. It all depends on your budget.

Hate to nitpick, but i have to interject.
Memphis is NOT new. Their subs are average, and most can be considered pretty good for the money, i just wouldn't consider then the top of the heap.

1 10in? well, i recommend a kicker L7. it's efficient, doesnt require much space (although it wouldnt hurt), and can kicks like a mule. i have 1 12in kicker L5 in my brother's prelude, and that bass is VICIOUS!! also, if you have the sub positioned properly, it'll give you even more bass...ppl dont realize that the sub box is actually inside ANOTHER box...your CAR, so positioning is vital.

hope that helps

The L7 is NOT efficient and it requires a HUGE amount of space... well if you want it to sound decent.

the L7 gives lots of deep bass, and for that, a pretty big chunk of power is required...a decent class D amp (i used an audiobahn 2x25rms with x-over) will do nicely for it...deep bass doesnt appear from thin air (no pun intended)...
as far as the space, it sounds best in a bandpass...NOT a closed enclosure. if used in a bandpass, it actually uses about 1/2 of the power it would use if used in a closed enclosure. Also, if foam is added inside the bandpass, it sounds even better....

there's always a sacrifice when it comes to power, space, and deepness of the bass...IMHO, the L7 gives you your money's worth.

I have 1 -12"memphis, with a kickerzr240, although it couple use alittle more power, it sounds full and clear...just my thoughts, but it all depends on what you run for your high and vocals, if you have high end components you'll need more from the sub to match, i have 6.5"macroms powered by a punch 360a4. i think it sounds pretty balanced..

you're right, he DID ask for 10", but i assumed that he was more concerned about the brand of the sub, not so much as the size...if a specific model is good, then i would hope that he'd assume that the 12" would kick a little harder than the 10".

I know that "sounds best" is subjective but personally I can't stand the sound of BP enclosures. Their double humped frequency response just doesn't cut it with me. It's true that a BP enclosure will give you the hardest hitting bass of all the enclosure options available but, by design, a BP masks distortion from the sub. This makes it easy for you to blow the sub without even knowing that you were pushing it too hard. Personally I like a sealed enclosure best since it has the best transient response of any enclosure. And it's also the most forgiving when it comes to having a slight mis-match between sub and enclosure. You can be off from the "ideal" enclosure volume and still get good results from the subwoofer. It also takes up the least amount of room inside your car. Vented enclosures are harder to get a good match between sub and enclosure (any mis-match isn't as forgiving as a sealed is) and they take up a lot more room as well.
