Sub Quality

I'm not arguing with you, but I know polypropalene has been raved about for some time now. Back with the old school 8" JL's. And aluminum is very stiff and can be lightweight but prone to resonance. Ehhhh, there's always a give and take.

rthompson...have you even read this thread? This particular thread is basically about budget system building...and you are telling me how wrong I am on surrounds and cones based on your knowledge of 'high end, high excursion' woofers.
Let's get back to basics. Link There's the link from the top of the thread. A cheap woofer with a paper cone and a foam surround. Based on what this guy is asking about...and the type of money that he's trying to spend...I would say...that without a doubt...the information I gave earlier would probably be more the rule than the exception for a system that MOST people would purchase for their cars (read "durability" & "cost"). At any rate...he was asking basically what a foam surround was...I was trying to give a generalization about the materials in question based on the price range we were talking about. Had I known that it would be taken as a statement about the materials across the board, I probably would have just kept my mouth shut. Now if you're talking high end systems...or products made for audiophiles....then sure...whatever you say. Hell...the best sound quality I've ever heard is my old vacuum tube setup @ home w/it's old paper and foam woofers and mid and high horns.
oh yeah...you can't put vacuum tubes in the car...I guess we weren't talking about high end here.

BTW there are tube amps for the car
Marc anthony tube driver
US amps has one
there are others, but that is what comes to mind right off the bat. Just check out the top 5 IASCA competitors at finals or SBN, you will find that about half use the US Amps TU series.

You lack comprehension skills. You just can't grasp the concept of a generalization I made based on the subject matter of this thread. Instead, you just seem to want to let everyone know your "extensive" knowledge of "high-end" audio systems. I guess I should be impressed. oh well.

no.........YOU are just pissed that you were so blatantly wrong , now youre trying to come up with some lame excuse.
a man learns to admit when he is wrong, a kid tries to come up with all sorts of reasons why he wasnt.
you said "A paper cone is usually not good. Prone to warping...breaking...cracking"
that is false.
you said "A FOAM surround is the cheapest type...nice thick rubbery material is usually what you would want for that."
that is not necessarily true either.........there is cheap rubber and expensive foam.
also.......why would he want a "thick" rubber surround on a budget system?.........if anything, he would want a lighter, more efficient foam surround to get the most out of his budget amplifier.
slayer6x6.......if you get that pair of rockford he2's for $100, that is a great deal, and you should be happy with those for sure.
This is nearly as amusing as the A-pillar post... lol
I think the point someone was probably trying to make here was... That in your car that you've installed this cheap subwoofer, you probably couldn't afford a grill either so something durable would be a good idea. I think the main reason most subs went away from paper and foam aren't because of their performance, but rather their durability. Which they prob wouldn't care about except that warrantly cost would be high on a sub prone to being easily damaged by your groceries.
Anyway, I got an IDQV2 12" for $140 and that seems extremely cheap to me... SQ is great and it moves a lot of air...

Y2kPewterSS, you hit the nail on the head. I'm going by what I learned for good sound, but DURABILITY. I'm sure I would think differently if I was only concerned with high-end stuff.
got_hp? ...who was talking about men and boys here?
I'm just talking about subs. No need to drop a little Cconfucious on us.

I just meant you can poke a hole in the paper ones pretty easily. I only have experience with pretty crappy paper coned speakers. And I've seen foam degrade over time, and I imagine in UV it would degrade faster.
After a little more thought, companies have prob went away from paper and foam because of marketing (consumer perception).
I don't even know why I'm involved in this convo... I don't know anything... lol
