Sub/amp cuts on and off.

Guys, I just had this problem developed where my subs woofer which is powered by a rockford amp cuts on and off. I dont think the sub (Jl 10W3) is blown because when it comes on, it sounds fine. This just started 3 days ago, where the sub will not work at all, then come on for like 5 minutes and then shut off and then come back on like 20 Minutes later and shut off after a few mintues....Sometimes it stays on for a good whiles before it shuts off.

Tommorow when I am off, I will check all the grounds, and power wire, and the speaker wire connection for the sub (that stuff I know I should check) but if that checks out OK ....Is there anything else I should check for.

I had the sub for about 2 years and the amp for about 4 years and this is the first time its ever done this.

Any insight on what else to check would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Claude

If all your connections are good and your amp isn't going into protection mode my guess would be that the amp is starting to fail.

It could also be a cracked solder joint somewhere on the circuit board. I've seen amps (Pioneer) that have their inputs soldered directly to the circuit board do this. Since there is stress on the RCA connectors the solder joints tend to crack after a while.

Have you checked to see if the amp's power LED stays on when the sub quits?

Thanks for the response broh, its much appreciated.

I have determined its the JL 10W3 D2 Sub that is bad. I hooked up the sub to my other amp and it does the same thing (wont play)..But if I put my hand and press lightly on the sub it will play but not good, as soon as I release my hand from the sub it will cut off. I also hooked up the Sub Amp to my regular speakers to see if it works, and it does....I checked all the wires, connection and all of that stuff is OK...I even checked the wires that were soldered on the sub to see if they were loose, bad or burnt and they seem fine too. I am not pissed about the sub going cuz it has served me well for the past 2 years with lost of Loud/Great sound EVERYDAY.

My Sub Amp is a Rockford 200.2 and its hooked up (400Watts Bridged into 2 ohms).

Now my biggest concern is what sub to get. I loved the sound of the JL 10W3 D2 sub I had and I want something that can fit in my MTX stealth box that will sound just as good or better (I dont want to go backwards in sound quality). I have a friend that works at Circuit city and he said he can get me some subs for 45% off but the only problems is that they dont carry JL Audio.
He said I can pick from and Alpine, Infiniti or MTX.

Any recommendations broh? I know you have excellent taste in Subs cuz you recommend my 10W3 to me 2.5 years ago and I when I got it, I loved it so much that I was singing your praises for a while

Any input would be apprecaited.
Thx,
Claude

I used to have a 10W3 D4 in my Vantage Stealthbox. I replaced it with an Alpine Type-S and it blows away the JL. The JL is a good sub but the Alpine seems to be a better match for the .6 cubic feet of the Vantage box.

Broh,
Thanks so much for the quick response. Do you know if its a specific Model number I will need or just a 10in Alpine S-type...
Also do you have any idea if it has dual voice coils, what omhs, and how much power it can handle?

What amp are you running with your alpine?

Thank you SO MUCH for helping me out again broh....Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

Mine has dual 4ohm VC's running at 2ohms. The model # is SWS-1041D The SWS-1041 has a single 4ohm VC

I'm sure someone will chime in saying to go with the Type-R instead. I feel that that would be a waste of money. The Type-R is a long excursion type sub that has to sacrafice cone area to allow for the larger surround. In a single sub installation you want to have as much cone area as possible to move as much air as possible. I see no point in having a 10" sub that has about the same cone area as an 8" sub. In a multiple sub install the Type-R may be a good choice but for a single sub setup I feel that the Type-S is the better choice.

Claude

Don't worry about the power rating. I think it's rated at 250W or so but my amp puts out 600W and I don't have any problems with bottoming out or anything like that.

Don't have any experience with the W7

Thanks again broh...

I had a few more questions for ya...Why did you ever get rid of the 10W3 you had? Did it finally go?

My friend is telling me that he Might not be able to get the S cuz he believes they dont have them in stock. But I went back to the store that I bought the 10W3 from and they said they can now get me a 10W3 V2 which is the newer version (handles more power and supposed better sound quality of the D2 of the D2 for a good price, 145.00....

What would you do? and why?

Again broh, your help is very much apprecaited.

I just wasn't entirely happy with the performance of the JL sub in my car. I've since placed it in a larger enclosure that I built and use it in my home theatre setup.

I don't have any experience with the new line of JL subs so I can't comment on them. Personally I would go with the Type-S because it costs less. I can't imagine the JL outperforming the Type-S enough to justify it's higher cost.

Thanks Broh, Your Opinion is very much appreciated....
I think, I narrowed it down to the S type and the 10W3 V2.
Its gonna come down to Who can give me the better deal.
If I can get the S at 45% off, I will definetly get it.

Thx,
Claude

Are you running a rockford P2002 or an older model? I have a 10W3D2 and thats what Im looking to get.

As far as sub recommendations I eventually plan on getting a D-Class GS redline. (info) I used to have two 12s exactly like that in my truck, and holy crap those were AWESOME speakers for the money. I sold them to buy goodies for my car, and I regret it now. I think they are becomming a rare find now (not being produced anymore possibly?) but a used one wouldnt be bad, because they are VERY durable and are hard to get to distort. Anyway, when I get some extra money thats what I plan on upgrading to if I can get my hands on one.

Steve aka LS1 RULZ you are the Freggin MAN Broh!!

I listened to you (against many others he in NJ, telling me to get the JL Audio again) and I got the 1041 Alpine sub last nite at a local Franchise electronics store (6th Ave Electronics). I normally would never trust one guys opinion over the rest but like I said, I value your opinion a lot since you never steered me wrong.

I got the last one, the Floor Model, which was in great shape and seem to play real well in the store. I only paid 80 bucks for it, (taxes included).

I have to say, even though its a fraction of the price, its very comparable to my JL 10W3 that I had. I do notice that the JL seemed to be slightly cleaner sound and mabee a little deeper but I think that will come with time. Cuz I remember when I first got my JL 10W3, it sounded good but after about a week of play (break-in period) the JL sounded GREAT. I belive after about a week of play, the Alpine should get even better too. I can tell that it still needs to be broken in cuz when playing it this morning for about 1 hour, I noticed the car was filling up with that new speaker type smell, which kinda indicates to me that even though it was the floor model it never got much use Especially since there was like 50 something other subs hooked up there.

But I wanted to thank You again broh. Great Recommendation...Especially for the price.

Thx,
Claude
