Stereo Removal

I'm trading my car, and I want to take the system with me. Right now, I have an EFX 1 Farad cap in the car, and I had that professionally installed.

I would like to know the safest procedure to remove my cap and amp from the trunk. If there are any step by step .txt's or something, that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

If the amp is still connected to the cap, I'd say, turn on your stereo AFTER you have disconnected the amp/cap from the battery. That will drain the cap in a few seconds. The alternative is a resistor and a few minutes of your time, that is more difficult to explain and not as easy to do in the first place.

Thanks for the help.

I would do that, but the Amp/Cap is installed in a tight spot. So at that point, I might as well just take the cap out.

Would it work to disconnect the battery, and then use a 12v light bulb hooked up to the cap to drain it?

Yeah, that would work fine too, it would just take longer. What I was suggesting is that you unplug the power cable that goes from your battery to the cap, disconnect the power AT the battery. The amp could drain the cap nearly immediately, the test light might take a while (several to many minutes) to completely drain it.

Or, could I just disconnect the main fuse on the 4ga + lead, and run the amp to drain the cap?

Yes, that is more or less doing the same thing as disconecting from the battery.

I have the same cap and I use a 12v light to charge and drain it.

To drain it just connect the light to the cap and turn it on. When it goes out it's discharged. To charge it connect all your wiring with the fuse removed then connect one end of the light to each side of the fuse terminal and turn the light on, it will come on then slowly fade away, when it's off the cap is charged.
