My girlfriend has a 97 camaro and it is needing new speakers. She has the factory cd player and I was wanting to put new speakers in the doors and the ones mounted next to the passangers. I was looking at the sony explodes but was wondering what you guys recomend for replacements. Also I dont know what size I need to get. Can anybody give me some suggestions.

Re: speaker upgrade

All the interiors are 6 1/2". A nice 4-way speaker should do the trick. The Sony X-plodes are pretty good nowadays. Then there's Pioneer, Infinity, Kenwood, etc. Pretty much just go out, shop around and hear whats out there.

Re: speaker upgrade

The woofers are all 6-3/4" Also called oversized 6-1/2" speakers or 6-1/2"S.

Just get a set of coaxials. 3 and 4 way speakers are a total waste of money. There is no point in having a woofer with what amounts to having multiple tweeters in front of it. A single dome tweeter can cover the entire bandwidth that is being covered by the multiple tweeters. If you like your sound harsh enough to etch glass then by all means gets 4 ways. Even 8 ways if they make them. If you want a nice even, balanced sound system just get the coaxials.

I'm not sure about the 97's but you may be disappointed with replacing the rear seat speakers. If they are subs like they are in a Monsoon equipped car the new speakers won't play and mids or highs since they are crossover by the factory amp. All you'll get out of them is bass.

Re: speaker upgrade

Most of the brands mentioned I agree with, except Sony... their car audio line is horrible as of the past 5 years or so. And 4-way speakers, uhm no, that just hurts thinking about it; basically that's 3 tweeters in 1 speaker; it's hard enough to get 6.5" speakers to reproduce lows let along when being massively overshadowed with highs.

You may have an issue replacing the speakers and keeping the factory HU depending on which stereo is in the car factory. A Bose or Monsoon stereo can not have the speakers replaced with aftermarket equipment without removing EVERYTHING and replacing the entire stereo including the HU and speakers.
