Speaker Replacement?
Speaker Replacement?
I need to replace the speaker by the rear seats in my 97 Trans Am. It has the Monsoon. When I pulled the old speaker out it has 4 connections on it? When I look at other 4 ohm speakers they just have 2 connections on them? How do I hook the the replacement speakers up to it? Thanks!
Ok, basically I'm guessing you were pulling the front speakers. In that case, these are the 2 ohm drivers with wired in tweeters, hence the 4 connections. The wires run to an amp located in the rear wheel well.
If I remember correctly, the speakers near the rear seats are 6" low range drivers--basically wanna-be subs. These are also 2-ohm speakers, and should have only 2 connections (the red and black, or whatever color it is). It's not recommended to replace these with conventional 4-ohm coaxials as you will need twice the power to drive them.
Basically, if you want to replace speakers, do monsoon-for-monsoon equipment swap, or get a new head unit, bypass the amp, and wire the speakers directly into the head unit.

To answer your question:
My mid-bass drivers also took a dump on me. When I did some research on replacing them (looked around for used Monsoon spearers fro mother board members), I found out that the Trans Am and the Z28 stereo systems are different (The TA speakers are dual voice coil with 4 wires and the Z28's are not). These Monsoon speakers are 2 ohm (they say 4 ohm on the back but are bridged down to two) and there are no replacements on the aftermaket for them. Dealer only item.
I called a local GM dealer to have him cross reference my Monsoon speaker part numbers with a set of Z28 Monsoon #'s. He informed me that they are in fact completely different. I was shocked! WTF?
He went on to state that if I wanted to hunt down a used set of replacements, it could only be from a '97-'98 Trans Am. Nothing else would work.
On the flip side, my buddy has a '99 TA and experencied the very same problem. He however, took the one connector Z28 speaker and spliced his two wires into it. Works fine for him...
FYI: These speakers are $60 each from the dealer.

The Firebirds use crappy looking dual voice coil speaker, where as the Camaro uses a hard to beat single voice coil speaker with a very high tech design.
Anyone who calls the Monsoon system " crappy " doen't like full range audio. Not all sound systems are judged by bass.....

Or they have a good ear
I definately don't judge mine just by bass, that's just two octaves. I judge mine by flat frequency response, staging, imaging, balance, and overall sonic integrity. And yes, the monsoon is crappy compared to any decent aftermarket products.

Well I guess my car doesn't have the Monsoon so I could be wrong?
But I do have the 1996 10 speaker system upgraded with the Monsoon (Camaro SVC) woofers in the sail panels.
When compared to a full Monsoon system mine actually sounds better.
I myself think the full Monsoon systems lack alot in all departments, I should have been more specific.
