sound newb needs advice
I'm about to completely update my sound system and I have an idea of what I want but I thought I'd run this by you guys and get some opinions/suggestions.
I have the head unit ordered : Clarion DXZ745MP
This is my idea for the speakers: Run a 4 channel amp (I'm looking at a clarion that puts out 50wx4 @ 4 ohms) to 4 6.5 in. speakers in the stock location. I think i'm gonna get some infinity kappa's for the front. What would you suggest for the rear seat side panels? Any suggestions that would improve this set up for not much more money? Thanks.....
PS- I'm car audio handicapped so if you use any jargin please simplify.

Re: sound newb needs advice
just get you a nice set of component speakers and keep everything the same...check out www.fbodyaudio.com....tons of people there that will help you out man.
Re: sound newb needs advice
Alright, I looked at fbodyaudio.com and after reading a couple of FAQ's came to the conclusion that I don't really need rear panel speakers so now I'm thinking about going with a pair of 6.5" component speakers in the stock locations powered by a 50 watt 2 channel amp. Then later getting a stealth box from subthump to add a sub.
This brings me to another question.....would the rear seat side panel be a good location for the crossovers? My idea is to take out the rear speakers and mount the cross overs in there so they're out of sight but I don't know if mounting them that far from the speakers is bad. Thanks for the help
PS: I'm not really worried about being super loud or super perfect clarity, I'm just after a good sounding system that will "hit" a little bit. I wasn't even going to redo the sound system but I am running on 3 blown speakers here so I guess I have to bite the bullet and just do it. Should be a good learning experience.

Re: sound newb needs advice
A couple ideas,
A) buying front kick-panels which would be for 5.25'' seperates (mid-range and tweeters) and then throw 6.5'' midbass free-air speakers in the doors. Possibly a 6 channel amp. Then toss in 2-12'' subs in the rear and you got a nice sounding system. With a couple new Alpine head-units now you can time delay speakers for very nice sound. Like one guy said, we dont know what you are looking to spend so it is hard to know what we should include in a system
B) Buying 6.5'' seperates and throwing them in the front, then a pair of free air midbass that you can throw in the rear seat open speaker slots and a single Q-logic 10'' sub enclosure that is made for the lecft hand side of the rear hatch area and a 10'' Kicker Solobaric for that enclosure.
There is a couple of options. Hope this helps a bit. PEACE! K.I.R

Re: sound newb needs advice
Ok last night I bought and installed some infinity 6000cs component speakers and an audiobahn 2002T amp (50Wx2). The sound is absolutely awesome!
. Thank you Ex Style for suggesting that I go with components. huge pain in the *** to wire though.......

Well lots of people say to just use front speakers, and forget the rears, well I think it doesn't sound full. Just run off the rears and see if you like how it sounds. I ran my alpine receiver, amp , sub and speakers for only the fronts, then switched back and used all speakers and the sound is much better. I'm only saying cause you are thinking of gettig a two channel amp, if you don't like only running two speakers then you'll have to get another amp and spend more money. i like having components, I put mine next to the black triangle things nest to the front pillars in that little space-works pretty well, and was easy to install, I just bought two metal L brackets, bent them to the riht angle and mounted them with the single screw that holds on the triangles. I also put asmall piece of velco on the bracket so it wouldn't scratch the palstic. If your not looking for killer bass then one sub should work fine for you.
Re: sound newb needs advice
I am a firm believer in NOT using rear speakers at all. Unless of course you have a true surround sound setup in your car. If you can't add delay to the signal going to the rear speakers they will only degrade the quality of your front soundstage. I have a simple 3 speaker setup in my car (2 main speakers and a pair of subs. Click the link below). If you do the install right you will never miss having the rear speakers. Whenever I demo my setup for someone they always ask me what kind of speakers I have in back. Most of them don't believe me when I tell tham I don't have ANY rear speakers. I even have to pop off the grill sometimes just to prove it to them.
You can mount your crossovers anywhere you like. Just remember that the further away from the speakers they are the more speaker wire you'll have to run. I have one long run to the crossovers in my kick panels and 2 short runs from the crossovers to the speakers in the door. If you place them in the rear speaker locations you'll have to run 2 long runs from each crossover to the speakers. Some people like to dispaly their crossover. This is OK to do just don't place them right next to each other. Having them too close together can result (remember I said "can" not "will") in signal crosstalk. The coils in the crossovers generate a magnetic field when they have a signal going thru them. This field can produce a signal in any nearby coil. In this case the coils in the other crossover. Place them a few inches apart and there shouldn't be any problem.
