safe to drill??

hey, i just got my 95 z28 a few weeks ago and im starting to put in my new stereo. I build my sub box and my amp rack already and want to mount it. I need to put the amps right behind the rear seatand was wondering how to fasten it. i dont want to drill into the gas tank or anything.. so i was thinking about using 1/2" self drilling screws to fasten everything down with. Would this be safe to use without hitting anything? thanks a lot!

I'd be REAL careful that you watch where you drill. As you get towards the bottom of the hump, there is more room, but at the top, there is less than 1/4" room between that hump and the gas tank, and I wouldnt want to drill into the tank!

What I do at work is put a piece of wood under the carpet, them mount the amps. Looks good and no worries.

hmm.. good idea about the amps but i auctually have to mount my box right at the top of the hump, right before it drops down. there is really no other place i can mount it because of the design of it. Is it safe to drill near the outer edges of the hump? i might be able to get away with doing it like that if its safe to do it that way.. thanks for the reply's right before i was about to drill i realized the gas tank was under there so i decided to ask first.. well thanks a lot guys!

Check 3-4 times, drill once. There have been 3 tanks hit in the past 2 months at work. Most recent and most expensive was a 01 Benz CLK 430.

After I replied to this post, I checked another board, some guy asked the same question, cause his tank was hit by his installer.

maybe i will use my dremel tool with the cutting attachment which allows me to limit the depth of the cut. This way i can drill an 1/8" deep hole and see if i can put a screw into it or not. I think this will be my best bet.. any ideas?

Don't do it. Do like ninesevenws6 said and put a board under the carpet and screw your amp into the board. What we do at work is put some silicone under the board and screw the amp into that board and when that silicone dries it's not going anywhere. Depending on how big your amp is and where your enclosure will be at you might can mount your amp in the left rear part of your car, the same location as the Bose sub goes. You can drill into car at that location.
