Radar Detector Install

Hey I'm looking to run the wire under my dash, up the a-pillar, then through the front of the headliner, I got all of it pretty much down except, how do I remove the A-pillar on my 98 t-top z28? Also I have a temporary setup right now with it placed slightly above my dash and back a bit. Its right above the AC vents in the middle of the dash above the stereo. WIll this make any difference if it is like 10 inches behind the glass? Thanks

Re: Radar Detector Install

why are you mounting your RD so high? It will be impossible for it to detect laser from up there, and it doesnt improve scanning range for standard radar either.

What you said. It says this in your RD directions.

I did this in my old car. Point of it, is so that way cops cant see that you have it, which means you may get a better chance of getting a warning for speeding...whereas if he knew you had a radar detector, he'd prolly just give you a speeding ticket for whatever speed you were going over the limit.

no problem

i should also add, that this works because even tho radar detectors arent illegal in most of the states, if a cop pulls you over and see's you have one, he'll prolly just give you the ticket to rub it in your face that you still got caught speeding even with a radar.

^^^ just to clear up confusion in case anyone thought i meant that i think their illegal

Re: Radar Detector Install

The A-Pilar covers are just clipped on with a metal clip on the back side in like 2 or 3 places. Just pull them off is what I've been told.

Re: Radar Detector Install

I place mine as low as I can, without having the wipers block them. Reason? Laser is not like a standard radio wave as the name suggests it is a direct beam of light about 30 inches wide directed at the front of the car (usually the license plate because its reflective and improves lock on time) my car is black and there fore very very hard to get a reading on with a laser gun until you get about 50 feet a way (white being the worst color to have) I have removed my front license plate as well so, while he is trying to hit me with his laser gun my RD will have a better chance of detecting it before he can get a reading, where as if it was up high it would have no chance of intercepting the light beam. Also, I really doubt the officer is any more likely to see it mounted low on the dash then up high, not to mention the display light can easily be seen from behind (but not as much if the spoiler is blocking it because of how low it is.

granted, removing your front license plate gives them a reason to pull you over, I would much rather get a ticket for that then speeding, and their also easy to get dismissed. I do what another member posted, i keep the frame and plate in the car and say I parked to close to a curb and it get scraped off and I haven't had a chance to fix it yet....been pulled over once in a year for it and it worked alright

There is also a product called Laser Veil ( or something like that) which you paint on your plate which drastically reduces the range they can get a reading on you from, and unlike numerous other scams this stuff really works...you can read up on it at www.speedzones.com, but its expensive, like 80 dollars a bottle.

Although, you can always get a hidden system from Bell....its about 1500 dollars and features external antennas and for 200 dollars more you can get a laser blocking add on (which by reviews works very well) but that's a little rich for my blood

Re: Radar Detector Install

I always thought the laser part on most detectors even budget ones detects the same types of laser and usually just as well. I've thought about it and I suppose you could buy a cheap $40 or so laser radar detector off ebay. Then free the laser portion from the rest of it and mount it right next to your front license plate. Then just hard wire it to the ignition. Then I suppose all you would have to to is extend the wires to the small speaker to get it inside the dash the dash and vola! you have a 50 dollar solution.

Re: Radar Detector Install

have to weather proof it in someway, but yeh that should work pretty good, but the more expensive models do preform better, in the reviews I read on the top compeating models mounted on the dash none of them ever detected laser directed right at them (this is in trucks where the RD is much higher then in our cars) and only the V1 and bell detected laser being bounced of the car infront of them, the cobras and other less expensive RDs detected nothing. This is because the chea[per ones dont have near the wide array of laser guns supported, and only detect the older guns that are no longer in use.

The thing about being mounted higher to see over hills is a myth. I don't feel like getting into how radar works so read some reviews from people more qualified then I. www.speedzones.com www.speedzones.com www.radarbusters.com

Re: Radar Detector Install

also you have to make sure and disable to radar detecting part of the RD completely, a friend wanted to see how his RD (cobra) preformed agaisnt mine (Bel RX65). They both went off at random times at the exact same time for no reason non stop....we later figured they must of been setting each other off because they never acted wierd when only one was plugged in, mine even kept detecting laser....only thing I can think of is his laser scanner was setting mine off...but disabling the dash mounted laser should take care of that.

Contrary to popular beleif this is not true. They all reflect radar and laser the same.

They did a myth busters on this and actually painted a car all flat black, which will absorb a lot more than your gloss black with the shiny clear coat over it. They still were able to get a perfectly good reading on it.

Re: Radar Detector Install

sorry, but your wrong. There are extensive reviews and tests on the matter from multiple sources...who in their test used a 4th gen firebird with actually local PD handling the laser guns, i was at the one done in El Paso by Speed Labs. I agree on radar though, paint color has no effect on radar.
