Question about Monsoon amp

Hey everyone, I have a 97 Camaro with a Delco head unit. My friend is giving me his Monsoon amp for free and I was wondering if this will hook up to my head unit or will I need the Monsoon headunit as well. Also, I want to upgrade all of my speakers, does anyone know of any online stores that offer good prices?

Re: Question about Monsoon amp

Do yourself a favor and tell your buddy to keep the POS Monsoon amp. It is NOT an upgrade. The factory HU puts out a lot of distortion at moderate levels. The louder you turn it up the worse the distortion gets. And since the POS Monsoon amp uses speaker level inputs it makes matters that much worse. It amplifies the distorted signal from the HU and adds it's own distortion on top of that. This is why the factory speakers are blowing all the time.

Re: Question about Monsoon amp

Actually, LS1 Rulz has been a good source of info for me, as well. I'm electronically challenged. I've been trying to locate a good installer in the San Diego area, and plan to get an Alpine HU, and probably Alpine speakers, and one of those woofers that fit in the D/S cubbyhole. No luck yet, but I went to Ed & Al's and the guy wasn't real interested in what I wanted, only in what he wanted to sell me. He wanted to charge me exactly $3K, but the twerp refused to give me his written estimate. Grr. I hate it when people try to scam me.

Re: Question about Monsoon amp

I'm not really looking to get crazy with the sound system, but after 94000 miles, the stock paper speakers have hit the end of their useful life. I kind of want a well balanced system like the Bose system that came stock in my Grand Prix GTP. I dont want to run subs, I just want to upgrade all six of my speakers with possibly Alpines, maybe a cheaper, but still good quality speaker if anyone knows of any. And finally, I was wanting to run a small amp to drive the rear speakers.
