You are quite uninformed...... a subwoofer doesn't care if a signal is distorted or not.

Here we go!

Although, rthompson is correct. Clipping your amp creates extra power. If the driver cannot dissipate the extra heat or exceeds it's mechanical limits, then the driver will fail......

What i ment by that post was that you will blow a subwoofer by underpowering and distortion (clipping) before you will overpowering with a clean signal and if that is wrong I guess Installer Institute misinformed me during my Introduction to formal installations (mecp prep) course

This is all great info guys. Thanks again for chiming in and helping out. I think since the fact that I'm not gonna be powering to its max very often at all that I'll probably just stick with the smaller amp. I still have the stock bose system and don't want to put out too much bass or it'll be way out of balance with the rest of my setup.
I'll keep everyone informed once I get it all in.

Thanks again for all the help,
Kyle

i just wanted to clarify, there is only TWO things that will blow a sub.

1. exceeding the mechanical limits.
2. Exceeding the thermal limits.

simply adding distortion does neither automaticly, but it can lead to #1 or #2.
