Putting together a little bit o' bass, help please..
Putting together a little bit o' bass, help please..
Ok, I work at Circuit City and get some darn good discounts on audio equipment. I've decided I want to put a stealth box in my Z and just give it a little extra kick, nothin special. I'm not an audio expert and I don't care much about hitting SPL (is it SPL??) levels, just listening to my cd's. So far here's what I'm planning on getting. Let me know what you think.
Stock Bose system running through a preout converter(yeah, I know, but still I'm not getting a new HU), MTX Thunder 421D (300Wrms @ 2 ohms at 12.5 VDC), Infinity Perfect 10.1d (dual voice, 350Wrms max) and the MTX stealth thunderform (0.6 cubic feet, the Perfect sub is made for this space). I could possibly go up to the Infinity Perfect DVQ, but I'm thinking that's a little overkill.
Let me know what you guys think about this setup. I'm not open to other brands, this is a do or not do type thing with these components only.
Thanks for any help,
Kyle

Actually, now that I was thinking about it, I could also go with an MTX thunder 6 or 8000 10" if that would be a better route than the Infinity. I can pretty much get anything from MTX and Infinity at great prices, so those are the main brands I'm sticking to. I feasibly could also get Alpine (type R or S) or Polk (which I won't) or even Sony or Bazooka, but yeah
on that.
Thanks again in advance,
Kyle
on that.Thanks again in advance,

I would suggest getting an empty JL audio stealthbox or a stealth box from www.subthump.com The MTX thunderfoams are just a harden plastic as where the JL is fiberglassed and the boxes off subthump.com are mdf. Ive seen alot of people blowing subs and having other problems due to plastic box flexing
I highly doubt that with the small amount of bass i'm going to use that it's gonna make the plastic flex too much. I'd go with the JL in a heartbeat, but I don't have the money for that stuff.
I'm now just debating the sub. Should I go Infinity or MTX?
Thanks again,
Kyle

Yeah, that ebay item was strange from the start. He ended it early anyways cause it was either "lost or broken"!
Anyways, I think I'm just gonna stick with my original plan and get the Infinity sub. It's a little more expensive than the MTX, but I think it should give a better sound in the long run, cause I like the sound as much as I like the feel.
Thanks for the help guys. Feel free to comment more if you'd like, it's gonna be a week or two before I buy.

Kyle, get the Perfect 10 and stealthbox, but get a better amp! Putting a sub in a smaller enclosure than recommended allows you to run more watts into the sub, because the setup is more inefficient in such a small enclosure. Perfect 10's have been found to run well in 1cuft boxes. The Perfect 12's run well in 1.4-1.5cuft boxes. (I used to spend all my time on a car audio forum in the past, and now I'm into speed) Good choice on the sub though, no need to get the higher line of Infinity Perfects. Let us know how it turns out!
Ok, then amp: the next mono amp up from MTX is the 801D, which makes 500rms @ 12.5 VDC. Isn't that quite a bit overkill, even if the sub can take more power? AND, on crutchfield.com it says that the Infinity Perfect 10.1d goes in a non-ported box, size 0.6 cubic feet. Not to doubt you, just getting my facts straight.
Thanks
Thanks
Certain companies' speakers are able to handle much more than their rated power. (ex: my JL Audio 18 W3 handles 400watts according to JL Audio's website, yet I've been running 800-900watts to it for 3 years now with ABSOLUTELY no problems) Infinity Perfect 10's can easily take 350-400watts. I personally would go for the 500watts, but for you I'd suggest going along with exactly what you first planned. Since you're going through Circuit City, just return the amp and get the bigger one if it's not enough for you. Good luck and be sure to PM me if you need any help whatsoever about anything related to car audio!
