problems installing radio

i have a 96 z28 with the rpo option for the AM/FM casette with the DelcoBose sound system. I took the cassette out and replaced it with an old Kenwood from my Cavalier - an MP628. The cd didn't work in it so I figured whatever, roll with it until I save up some money and buy a new receiver. I bought an M208 from crutchfield for 100 bucks and got all the stuff with it. I tried installing it the other day, but it wouldn't work. no sound at all. The crutchfield guys told me I needed to buy an amp adaptor/preamp and then it would work. But wouldn't the sound have just been REALLY loud when I plugged it in before? The old Kenwood hooked up w/o an amp but then again it was 4x22W so maybe it didnt need a preamp.

Im just really pissed off about this cos its an annoyance, dont want to find I blew up everything and need to replace the entire system. My dads bitching at me for not including him in helping me replace the CD and all. Im about to go out and try putting the old receiver back into the car and see if it works.

___UPDATE___
I went out and just plugged the old radio back in. it works perfectly fine, except I noticed that when I turn it down to/up from 0 volume I hear a pop I guess just the amp coming on or something. I hope I didnt break anything, Im sorta new to the car audio install stuff but it went relative easy the last two times so I thought I could do it myself. Just tired of my dad yelling at me, haha. He's never heard of what the crutchfield guys said or what I assume you are gonna tell me, I tried telling him about it with the stock cassette/am/fm radio and having an amp behind it that needs to be regulated but he thinks the sound would be loud as hell at low volume when I had no sound.

BTW the new receiver is 4x50W like I said the old was 4X22W. I didnt do much else except maybe tug the wires a little bit to get the GM harness connected but I didnt rip anything.

The preamp is on the way and Ill try that when I get it.

Thanks a lot guys.

You don't need any extra hardware for installing a new head unit in a Bose system. You probably didn't wire up the amp signal wire right.

yeah i looked at the manual (wow what an amazing idea) and the p cont (blue white wire) from the receiver goes to the blue wire on the car harness. i had the car harness blue spliced to the power antenna wire. fixed it and hooked it up and it works.
