No sound from JVC
No sound from JVC
It's a JVC KD-GT5, circa 1993 I believe. 3-cd cartridge changer.
Anyway, I've got it all hooked up. No short circuits or anything silly like that. I've reset the "microcomputer" (LOL) and no sound. Everything works great, but no output at all from the line level leads (it has no pre-out). Any suggestions?
I need something to stick in my car in case I decide to trade it.
Also, if this doesn't work out, does anybody know where I can get the old style self-powered 1.5 DIN Delco units? I'd like to just stick one in there and call it done.

Re: No sound from JVC
If the unit gets power, either the laser needs realignment, something's up with the carttridge or it just went bad. It more or less is probably the changer's time. For the most part they dont even come close to lasting as long as yours.
Re: No sound from JVC
This has nothing to do with the optical pickup. If i remember right this unit had no internal amp, just the RCA output (line our, pre-out, or the same here). If you can just hear the music with the volume all the way up check Q931. Q931 is the muting transistor and the GT5j/GT7j had a history of going leaky and muting the signal. JVC are also notorious for bad solder connections. Vary common. Check and the solder connections. Did the GT5j have a mute input? Something easy to check.
Re: No sound from JVC
Dude I think you're right. This is hilarious!
Brand JVC
Built-In Power Amplifier No
Manufacturer Part Number KD-GT5
LOL!
So WTF is up with four channels of speaker output leads that have no power! I guess they are line level outputs. Man this thing is corny.
Holy crap. I can't believe this.

Your not using an amp? Ya, that'll never work out.
It shouldn't be four speaker leads. It should have come with a harness unique to the GT5/GT7 that had RCAs hanging off of it.
It's not that corny. Allot of high end units don't have speaker lever outputs. The thought is that most people going of SQ are not going to use the internal amp anyway, they'll use external amps. So they don't give you one. All (if not most) of the Clarion pro HUs didn't have speaker level outputs, as well as allot of other highend units.
Besides all that, there is ALLOT going on in the unit to start with. The extra real estate made it easier to fit a three disc changer into a DIN unit.

Re: No sound from JVC
This thing has normal wires hanging out the harness that's plugged into the unit. It looks exactly like speaker level outputs, only it has no power. I call that corny. Now a set of RCA's yeah... seen that a million times but never line level leads hanging out the back. Now I'm no audiophile so this may have been normal back then, but it sure freaked me out. What I also gawked at was that it was this nice HU with no RCA's... so it has 8 wires, coded with your standard color codes for JVC for speaker level outputs, two for each channel, but has no power.
