Newbie Monsoon Question

I did a quick search and really didn't turn up a whole lot of information. I am planning on replacing the stock speakers for now on my Monsoon. However, when I do replace the HU, I wouldn't mind incorporating "all" the speakers in there. Is there a seperate amp located somewhere on the car? Can I "plug in" to it so I can run the doors, sails and trunk speakers?

I would like to do subs...but unfortunatly don't have the room....I haul DJ stuff with it... Looking at picking up an Alpine GPS HU (The AVIC-N1/N2's have cheap internals)....thanks guys!!!

Re: Newbie Monsoon Question

The POS Monsoon system uses a power booster along with the amp inside the HU to power the speakers. The tweeters in the door and the speakers (tweet & 4" mid) in the hatch area are powered by the HU. The woofers in the door and the subwoofers (HAHAHAHA yeah right, subwoofers) in the B-pillars are powered by the POS Monsoon amp. The amp uses speaker level inputs from the HU to get it's signal. Thats why I call it a power booster instead of a power amplifier. The amp is located forward of your spare tire above the rear wheel. It's mounted to a plastic plate and is located on the fender side of that plate.

The woofers in the doors have 2ohm voice coils. The subs (snicker) have dual 4ohm voice coils being run in parallel for a 2ohm load. The tweets and the 4" mids are 4ohms. Since almost all after-market speakers are 4ohms your new speakers will only be getting about half as much power as the factory woofers were getting. The door speakers are being bi-amped so you'll have to know how to connect your new speakers to the factory wiring. If you know what you're doing you shouldn't have any problems. If you don't know what you're doing forget about it and let someone else do it for you.

The POS Monsoon system is a very poor factory stereo. And it's got all kinds of quirks about it that can make it hard to add after-market stereo equipment. The best thing to do is scrap the entire thing and replace it with quality after-market gear.

If you want to add a sub you can use a stealthbox type of enclosure and still have room to haul stuff around. Click on my sig and take a look at my car's setup to see what I mean. If you're interested I've got a JL Audio "Vantage" stealthbox I need to sell. I have it listed in another thread on this forum if you'd like to take a look.

Re: Newbie Monsoon Question

SWEET setup man.... I love that single din trim....

As far as the sound system...short of replacing the factory speakers, I am not going to do much yet. Saving my cash for a 12 Bolt and tires....but you've given me alot of ideas....NICE JOB!
