need help choosing system
I need help in selecting 10" sub and amp for my car. I already know I be getting the MTX T Form box or something similar. But I would like to upgrade to better stuff than what they offer as package. The two subs I have in mind are MTX Thunder5500 and Kicker CompVR. Anyone recommend anything different. I have no idea on what amp to get. This stuff is all confusing to me. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money either.
Re: need help choosing system
I have a 10" Alpine Type-S that will work great in a Stealthbox style subwoofer enclosure. It's got dual 4ohm VC's that would make it an ideal sub for a Class-D subwoofer amp running at 2ohms. I just upgraded to dual subwoofers in my car so I had to get 2 dual 2ohm versions.

SPL - Sound Pressure Level - Basicall how loud can you get, with no regards to musical reproduction or clarity
SQ - Sound Quality - How cleanly, clearly, & accurately can you reproduce the sound and have it sound "right"
SQL - Sound Quality Loud - How Loud can you get while still keeping the SQ of the music being reproduced.
Most people are either SQ or SPL, most equipment only can lend itself to one or the other depending on the install.
SQL is a new term that came about when the new "Super" subs started being manufactured by multiple manufacturers that could reproduce music with extreme clarity, accuracy, and cleanliness while still being able to get loud. Ex: JL W7, Adire Brahma, RE XXX. NONE of these subs are what is to be considered entry-level equipment and is typically only used with people who either have too much $$ or really know what they are doing and how to use the driver appropriately.

Re: need help choosing system
That is a thermal limit though, they rate speakers like this at the thermal failure point, basically the wattage you can feed the speaker before you melt the varnish on the voice-coil wires.
The actual wattage that you will be able the feed the driver is driven by the enclosure that it is installed in. A small enclosure you can feed that much power in and everything is fine, but a large sealed or ported enclosure you may only need 700Wrms before you reach Xmax of the speaker and begin damaging the speaker.

Honestly, I've always done it with doing a best guess, slightly over-powered, and then just adjust the gains properly when tuning the system.
For any large or ported box I would just buy a 1kWrms amp and tune the gains, this creates less stress on the amp as well Vs running it at full-power.

My setup for SQL:
(2) x JL 8W7's
(2) x JL 500/1
(1) x JL 300/2
(1) x CDT EFCFi-61
(1) x Clarion DRZ9255
This was my once in a lifetime, cost no object system. Am I happy? **** yes.
