MTX amp works only half the time.
My MTX sub amp cuts out on me, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with it overheating, its just sometimes it works other times it doesn't I tryed hooking it directly to the battery right at the terminals with short wires, and still the probem continues. One store wanted 60 bucks to look at it, its about two years old (although I have only run it for about 6 months) and it pushs 400 watts, Should I buy a new one, or fix it. Is there any way for me to test for something thats going wrong. I can't figure out why it would all of a sudden do this, my alpine has been running flawlessly since 1997, this makes me think twice about the qaulity of MTX, which I have always heard as good.
its a pretty thick wire, I can't remember the size, I think its a 4 gauge, I have it grounded in the trunk right to some metal, I run an alpine off the same ground with the same remote wire, and that amp is working fine. I can't figure it out, when I'm driving it will be workig one minute, then the next it won't. What is a DMM, is it some kind of multy meter?
Hmmmm..... did you scrap all the paint off the ground? REALLY well??? Because I had a friend that thought he scrapped it good enough. Whipped out the old multi meter and saw that the voltage was hovering around the 12V line. 11.9 - 12.1V turns out the amp has a protection curcuit that shuts the amp off below 12V. We roughed up that ground a bit and BAAM! Worked perfect. If that's not the case.... Try moving the amp to a friends car. You don't have to do a complete installation, just run wires from your car to his. Use logical troubleshooting.
I know this is a old post but...
If your still having this problem...
Try unhooking one of the subs or wiring them to create a high ohm..most likely they are 4 ohm subs and you wired them into 2 ohm and mosfet is kicking the amp off...I had this same problem with my kenwood 829 when I tried to create a 2 ohm load on it..wired it up for 8 ohm and it hasn't cut off yet.
