Monsoon Speakers Cut Out

i have a 97 t/a. i installed a new pioneer headunit (deh-7800 i think) and i also took out the sail panel subs cause they dry rotted and blew. for some reason, when the stereo gets to 60% or more volume, they cut out.

i have the monsoon amp wire leading to the remote signal on the headunit...just as i did with my 94 t/a (even though its not monsoon, its very similar). works fine until it cuts out due to higher volumes.

is my headunit potentially causing this issue, or is it the monsoon amp for some reason? any suggestions?

Monsoon sucks, nothing wrong with headunit. Mine was doing exactly same thing on '97 TA. Rip the whole damn thing out - only one solution. When I had monsoon I couldn't realize, how bad it sounds...

Re: Monsoon Speakers Cut Out

There is no remote turn on lead for the POS Monsoon amp. The POS Monsoon amp has circuitry that detects whether or not there is a signal at it's input. When it senses a signal it turns the amp on.

The POS factory HU is definitely part of the problem. I did some testing of the factory system that was in my '99 T/A using my oscilloscope and a calibrated test CD. After only 23 clicks of the volume control the HU began to clip it's output signal. Try turning your HU up 23 clicks and you will hear that this is not very loud at all. The higher you turn up the volume the worse the clipping gets. So now you are feeding a badly clipped signal to a very poor quality amplifier that only has speaker level (NOT RCA level) inputs. So now this poor quality amp is adding it's own distortion on top of the distorted signal from the POS HU. This is why the factory speakers are blowing all the time.

My suggestion is to replace EVERY part of the POS factory system.

Re: Monsoon Speakers Cut Out

well, i DO have the HU replaced with one that is actually VERY nice.

the problem is, the amp itself off. i do consider myself to be a pretty good car audio enthusiast, but never messed with the monsoon. a car audio tech at best buy (where i work) said they wire new HU's to it all the time. he said rather than putting the speaker lines from the HU harness, cut off some RCA's from a cable and attach them to the speaker leads on the car-side harness, then plug them into the preamps.

basically, the HU i have is obviously going to send a much higher signal than necessary to the amplifier, and its asking for one with a lower frequency. i bought some new sail panel subs for 20 bucks on ebay, so when those get here, ill replace the ****ty ones and test that idea. the guy says it works well.

i will definitely replace the stock speakers since i have a very handsome discount and the ability to properly install the goods. i just need the funds because i started elsewhere.

thanks for everything dudes,
randy
