Monsoon Door Speakers

Hi all ,

I have a 2000 Z28 with the monsoon system. I think I've blown the passenger side door speaker on the passenger side. Do I have any other options other than buying a set off ebay ?

I spoke to a Crutchfield rep who said all they carry is 4ohm speakers and if Im not mistaken the Monsoon system is a 2ohm one.
He said if I put 4ohm speakers in that I would loose some of the sound in the transfer.

I'd appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thanks

Patrick

The guy from Crutchfield is right. Replacing a 2 ohm with a 4ohm means that you'll only be getting half the power that the 2ohm speaker was getting. If you're not in to high performance car stereo your best bet is to get a factory replacement speaker. Then ease up on the volume control and back off the bass settings on the EQ. The POS Monsoon is a huge distortion generator and if you continue to play it at high levels you're gonna blow the speakers. The POS Monsoon may be rated at 500W but the thing they don't tell you is that that is a MAX power rating. So while you may be getting 500W you're getting it at 10% THD or higher. I'm guessing MUCH higher by the rate they blow speakers all the time.

LS1Rulz there is NO WAY the Monsoon amp has 10% THD your music would sound like complete dog**** at any level. However you are correct about the amp maxing at 500 watts in a Trans Am... in a Camaro its only 200 Watts.

As for replacing the speakers it can be done and sound good, read my other post, no its not competition level, but aftermarket speakers are much higher quality than stockers, and while you'll get half the power they basically sound just as good if not better, and carry the same volume level.

I can almost guarantee you that the THD is that high. The POS only puts out maybe 25 clean watts/channel at full bandwidth. But if you run a 1kHz test tone thru it at full power you can get significantly higher amounts of power at high levels of THD. Trust me on this one. I've seen the measurments before. Full banwidth power levels and "band limited" (a single test tone) power levels are a LOT different from each other.

I could be wrong on this but I think by the 2000 model year Camaros were upgraded to the sp called "500W" system.

So basicaly what youre saying is that if you run a test tone through it you cant get that kind of THD... Well thats obvious... any amp if you crank it hard enough is going to do that. But that level of THD full range would destroy speakers very very quickly and sound like complete crap no matter what volume you play it at... While I agree it could be high, theres no way its 10%

All I can tell you is that I've seen the measurements and 10% THD at max power is common. Look at all the posts regarding blown factory speakers. I think that proves that the POS is putting out high levels of distortion.

Take a look at this.

Those Zapcos are Sub Amps... 10% THD is ok when all youre running is low frequencies.

I'll say it again there is NO way that a full range amp, even a "POS" like the Monsoon amp is putting out 10% THD through the full range... if It put that much out it would blow tweeters the first time you turned it up... Heck the Alpine SPS tweeters I hooked up would be dead already... At RMS power there is NO way theres that much distortion, and youd have to crank it to an ear bleeding unlistenable level to get that much out of the full range if it would even go that high.

Its one thing to run a test tone at an unlistenable level at max power, any amp will hit that much distortion, but even look at the worst Pyramid amps, even those are only 0.05% THD at RMS power and they sound like trash even compared to the monsoon.

I've decided that I am going to get a set of factory ones off ebay and see if I can contol myself from using as much bass as I did.

If that dont work I'm gonna take your advice and try changing em out.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions.

DaDeltaRep, I sent you a PM, I have a pair of stock monsoon 2 ohms chilling at work in my tool box. I was going to use them in some stupid manner but if they are needed Ill part with them. They came out of a 00 Firebird, I think
