Question Monsoon Amp Impedance

Two quick questions:

1) Does anyone know of the website that specs out the Monsoon system for the 99 Camaro? I'd like to know what the source impedance of the stock sail panel subs are.

2) Has anyone measured the load impedance of these subs (stock subs)? On the coil, they're labelled 2-ohm...but I've measured 3.5-ohms, on average. In order to minimize the power reflected back into the amp, it's probably best to stick with a 2-ohm match (but we'll need to know what the source impedance is first and the tolerance of the output channel), but I've seen a wide range of impedances starting at 1-ohm and ending at 16-ohms.

Sorry if these questions ask for specific answers, but I had one of my subs go out. In the past, I had the set replaced under warranty (in addition to the Monsoon amp). Without gutting the whole system, I'd like to know what my options are without unloading my bank account. I'm sure that everyone has gone through this.

Thanks for your input!

Well, basically you'll need a 2 ohm speaker to get good output. And they aren't really made. Have you considered adding a small sub setup, or is that too much money? Anyway you look at it you'll need an external amp to get good results.

Thanks for your reply. Looks like I might just go with a new amp and matching set of speakers for the front and rear.

Cheers,

2 ohm mid's

image dynamics makes a set of 6.5inch mids that are 2 ohms. i forget their model number but i did a search for 2 ohm midbass speakers and it came up with them.

I think you are talking about these:

But I don't think they would work out that well to replace the stock woofers in the sail panels though.

To answer your questions:

1. 2 ohms is what the Camaro's stock subs are. I think the Firebird/Trans Am got dual voice coil 4 ohm drivers but don't know for sure on that.

2. Keep in mind, when you use a multi-meter you aren't measuring the impedance. You are actually measuring the DC Resistance of the driver. (Resistance in this case is the measurment of the speakers resistance to flow DC current and impedance is the measure of the speakers resistance to flowing AC current)

Impedance of a speaker is frequency dependant. When you use a multi-meter to get the resistance of the speaker that will be the lowest impedance the amp will see with that speaker but the impeance of the driver vaires with frequency.

Hope this helps.
