JL vs. JL stereo gurus, quick?
JL vs. JL stereo gurus, quick?
it's been a long time since i've been into purchasing new equipment but i'm getting ready to do a really radical interior and i'm contemplating changing things up. i have a shop helping me with some of the actual work and through the process they have suggested some changes. for visual sense i wouldn't mind updating my equipment but the price to do so seems rediculous so i'm looking for opinions. heres the setup now.
premier 4x6's 3 ways in dash
premier 6x9 4ways in rear quarters
premier 6" component s-way in lower kick pannels
3 JL 10w6 (bought new in 2001)
PPI 4800 amp
PPI 2150 amp
none of this was meant to compete, basically sound decent enough over the large motor without breaking the bank which it has done well since new. i'm getting ready to do a full redo on the interior and the shop helping me wants me to upgrade naturally. i wouldn't mind if things were reasonable but the fact my pieces work decent enough i'm questioning it and the price obviously
here is what they are suggesting and cost.
(2) JL XR 560 CSI component setups ($750)
(1) JL XR4 which i think is another component set ($300)
(3) Jl 10w6v2 ($1050)
(1) 1000/1 ($800)
(1) 450/4 (650)
$3800 total..
now i've been out of audio for along time, looking up the specs of everything they seem to be about equal give or take obviously since the new pieces are updated slightly in certain areas and the 2 extra sets of components will ad more. is it worth the $3,800+ to change out my old setup when the components i have work well... they just aren't "new" and naturally aren't all matching? i want to redo this once and do it right but $4,000 for all of this JL equipment seems rediculous. that doesn't even include wiring, caps and everything else i'll need. i'm sure i can find all the pieces cheaper else where which i would do in the end but i'm just trying to figure out if it's justified to do so beyond having the "newest" equipment which isn't important to me.
any thoughts? also is there any reliable place to purchase online? seems many retailers in my area are on the ladder with prices..

Re: JL vs. JL stereo gurus, quick?
Honestly, for that price, I could build a nicer sounding system than anything JL could offer.
Check out some of the other brands than JL, they maybe a decent main-stream MFG, but there is better stuff out there at a LOT better pricing.

Re: JL vs. JL stereo gurus, quick?
and i agree which is why i'm asking for opinions but i don't have the ability to to search out every product so i'm looking for some comparable sounding equipment for reasonable ranges or better equipment for the same price.
Re: JL vs. JL stereo gurus, quick?
I'm personally using Adire Audio and Xtant equipment. Adire Subs, Components, and Mid-range Drivers; Xtant Amps. I'm also a fan of the Resonant Engineering equipment as well. Both companies make some unbelievably performing equipment for great prices.
I'd also bet that a single or pair of Brahma's or XXX subs from either of those companies will BLOW AWAY the performance in both SPL and SQ of those JL subs; not to mention the midrange or components; all at a cheaper price as well.
For amplifiers, those PPI's are actually very nice units, better than the JL's IMO.

Re: JL vs. JL stereo gurus, quick?
i love my jl and ppi setup as is... just trying to figure out if i'm truly going to gain much chainging over to the newer jl units or anything else at all. i do not plan to compete. just want it to sound decent which they have in the past.
Re: JL vs. JL stereo gurus, quick?
Jeff,
I would not change much if its working and sounding good. You cant really beat the PPI amps or the JL's IMO. If anything get some better components.Other than that upgrade when something craps out.Put the money elsewhere. Steven

Re: JL vs. JL stereo gurus, quick?
Jeff,
I would go with the JL W7's. But 3 would more than likely hurt someone.lol..... Maybe 2 wired to drop down that 2150 to draw more out of it. If you dont want to spend that much than there is the 10W6v2 in your old box. Steven
