Irritating Interior
Irritating Interior
Now that I have a sub and all, how the hell do I keep the interior from rattling itself apart? The worst pieces are the two sail panels and the two panels in the hatch area. Damn thats annoying!

I don't know why everything thnks dynamat cures rattles.... it just makes the sound that's in the car stay in the car and the sound that's outside the cars tay outside the car... it's a sound deadening material. It changes the frequency of whatever it's applied to vibrates at.
For the sail panels and such vibrating, find out where they are vibrating and what they are vibrating on... then put some weatherstripping foam tape inbetween the panels and whatever they are hitting. I've got weatherstripping tape between lots of my panels and it's stopped 99% of the vibrating interior panels.

I still have a lot of exterior spoiler/hatch rattle now that i need to cure.
Also... one more thing with the dynamat....
I bought a bunch of the "unmarked" Dynamat and some real stuff... they were prettymuch the same... But... It didn't seem to work as well as I would've hoped... thus the project I started this weekend... removing all of it from my car and going to spray-on (Ruberized undercoating).
I just did my GFs '97 Jetta in all spray-on and it worked so much better than mine with sheets, it took more prep work.. but other than that it was just spray and let it dry after you masked everything off. I didn't have to worry about whether or not the matte stuck really well to my body-panels.. which I found out now that I've removed a bunch... it doesn't stick 100%... unlike the spray-on which is paineted on and has 100% adhesion.
It's a ton of work to remove the stuff... let's just say I'm sore from about 4 hours of doing it and I'm barely 1/4 of the way done... not fun stuff.

The weatherstriping will stop most of the vibrations and rattling that you are hearing. You can get it at any local hardware store. It's like $5 for a 25' roll of the stuff.
With the dynamat I'm never using the sheet stuff again... whether or not it's the brand-name stuff. Go to Walmart or any autoparts store and check out Ruberized Undercoating, it typically comes in a large spray bomb (can). That's the stuff I've used and am using.. the 3M stuff to be exact.
But remember sound deadening doesn't help rattles; it's used to deaden external sound.. and to keep your stereo sound inside the car.
