What is the cheapest way to make a high quality
digital recording of my cars exhaust? It would be
nice to also record it going through the gears.

Stereo would be nice too but is not necessary.

 

If you have a laptop you can record with (sound recorder)your exhaust that way. Have somebody in the backseat and have a small computer mic taped on your back bumper and as soon as you are ready have your buddy hit record simple I did it sounds great, but also mine is over 5meg. big file for sound.

 

Tape recorder to hard drive to mp3/wav. That's how I did it. Put mp3s of my exhaust on my webpage years ago.

 

How do you get the computer to read the tape player?? Through the line in on the back ion the sound card???

 

I used a program called Magix Audio Studio I got in 99 that I still use to this day. There's a whole lot more programs out there. Just run a cable from the tape recorder to the audio inputs (mic) of the sound card, then mess around with the volume.

 

Cool thanks its a pain in the butt to carry a laptop around when you could use a tape recorder with lineouts.
