if you have a stereo at home, you can just hook up the speaker leads to the speaker and test it out. If you have an amp in your car, or someone else's car, just hook it up to that and test it out. Be sure to test it out at around mid level volume to make sure it works. b/c if the speaker is blown, sometimes you can't tell at low level volumes.

Just make sure that your home stereo is 4 ohm stable if you go that route. You don't wanna melt a nice home A/V unit that would not be good .

for a quick test, it should be fine. I was really refering to like a CD/Stereo player. I don't think running it at low impedence for a little while will hurt it. My old stereo system I ran at 4 ohms for years even though the instructions said not to run it lower than 8 ohms

That shouldn't be a problem for a quality stereo system. If the load is too low either the short circuit protection or thermal protection circuitry will kick in and shut the amp down.
