High and low pass filter?

My kenwood head unit has high and low pass filter adjustments. The front and rear high pass filter adjustment are through/40/60/80/100/120/150/180/and 220, so does this mean say I set it at 60 it'll only pass freqences higher right?
The low pass filter I can set at 50/80/120/through. what does it mean by through. How would I go about setting these filters. Thanks for any help.

The "through" on the low pass setting allows all the frequencies through. A better label would have been "all pass" or words to that affect. Try setting both high and low pass settings to 80Hz for starters. Then you can experiment with overlap and underlap crossover settings with the other settings. Don't bother using the 120Hz low pass setting. That's too high for a good subwoofer crossover point. The only time that would really come in handy is if your main speakers were 5-1/4" or smaller. Speakers that small can't deal with much bass so the sub has to help fill in that area of the spectrum.
