Hifonics BX500D/Alpine Type-S sub

Would this amp be ok to push a single 12" Alpine type-s sub wired for a 2 ohm load? Anyone had any any experience with this amp?? Though about putting this sub into a stealth box or a millhouse! Thanks

It's hard to say not having experince with the components but it seems that the amp might be weak under a 2 ohm load. It seems that it is rated at 500W @ 1 ohm which would likely be 250W @2ohms. 250W would not be adequate for my tastes. The sub seems weak also only rated to 200W max. I know it's considerably more money but you can't go wrong with a Kicker solobaric in a small sealed box with 400+ watts behind it. Even just a single 10" L7 would produce very convincing low tones with at least 400w pushing it.

small sealed + solo = eeewwww

If i recall that amp does 500 at 2 ohm... correct? That might be a bit much for that sub, but i don't have any experience with that sub.

Not so. My sub amp is rated at 600W @ 2ohms and I have no issues at all with the 10" Type-S I'm using.

So the Type S takes 600 with no issue? Alright.... Like i said i don't have any experience with the Type S.

So,you are using an Alpine- s sub? The amp is rated at 500X1@1ohm,but I can't tell if it is max or rms ratings. Some sites say rms,the others max? I don't want to go to big, don't want to have the lights diming, alternator crapping out, etc.

my mistake i guess the amp is only 250 watts at 2 ohm, i was going off memory and there isn't a whole lot of 500 watt amps that put out max power into 1 ohm so i assumed it was 2 ohm. And i didn't know how well it would handle 500 watts anyways. If Rulz says it works well with that power then i can go that way......

I still say that Solo + small box = EEEWWWWW..... they aren't small box subs by any stretch of the imagination.

From what I see on the boards,ALOT of people are using the type-s,even the subthump site has that as one as the recommended subs for that box!

This statement is confusing to me. If you are saying that a kicker solobaric L7 won't work well in a small box then you couldn't be more incorrect. That is what is was designed for and anyone who has heard a correctly setup application can't dispute that it works well. If someone did refute that it would be like saying John Force can't drag race, Dragsters are slow, the space shuttle can't go into space, etc. etc. etc. Please tell me you are not saying that.

sorry guy, the round solos were made for small boxes, the square ones are a totally different animal. Look it up.... Do a little calculation to see what size box it takes to get a .707 QTC, and compare it to a real small box sub like an Adire Brahma, IDQ Eclipse Aluminum..... If you actually knew something about them i would take you seriously, but it appears that you have not looked at the specs.

It's not that an L7 can't work in a small box. Because they can. Totally agree there. But they sound a lot better if you can give them more air space. A 10" L7 can work in like .6 cu.ft. or whatever and it sounds okay. But IMO they sound a lot better in at least 1.0 cu.ft. The 12" version sounds a lot better at 1.5 cu.ft. than it does at the recommended .8 cu.ft. JMO. I have heard both. I just think the "small box" bit is a little misleading. Maybe they should advertise 'works in small box', 'sounds much better in big box'. I dunno.

JL subs are quite similar. A 12w3 to me sounds a lot better with 1.25-1.5 cu.ft rather than the recommended .8 cu.ft. If you want a nice small box woofer, elemental designs sub are a good choice.

Well I've been doing hi fi including cabinet and crossover design for over 20 years and experience has shown me that specs don't mean a whole lot and a lot of times they aren't even accurate at all. I believe the proof is in the pudding. Put an L7 in a cubic foot box with 400+ watts behind it and tell me it doesn't handle low frequencies well. You can't if you want to stick to truthful comments. Another factor you may not be considering is the crossovers and bass boosters, box stuffing, etc. that can change the total sysem "Q" drastically. There are way too many factors to consider besides just the speaker's specs. I've owned both the old round solobarics and the L5 and L7 so I have long term daily listening experience also. The new square drivers are very good in this application just like the old ones and it would be hard to find someone that would challenge that because it's a hard fact. Specs are not to be completely disregarded but you can't rely on them so heavily. There are plenty of speakers that claim to have a completely flat response curve that sound terrible. And there are plenty of nicely spec'd sub speakers out there that just plain suck. I can't say I'm impressed at all with the Adire from the info I can gather. It's also easy to see why they are so inneficient. Paper cones and foam surround? Why would anyone use these inferior materials? They sucked 20 years ago and they still suck now. I don't think they even make egg crates out of that paper pulp anymore. I haven't heard these but I just can't imagine them being any good because all the others I've heard using these materials are very inferior. They are either muddy or sloppy or terribly inefficient or a combination thereof. Some people like the soft, warm sounding, punch lacking characteristics of paper but not me. I'm into accurate sound reproduction and that is what hi fi is all about.

Efficiency has nothing to do with cone type.... care to argue?

Hoffman's Iron Law states that a speaker can have two of the following three attributes.
Low frequency extension
Efficiency
small box

the factors that determine this are MMS, BL, suspension compliance...... not cone material.

Why is it that the Eclipse Aluminum is a very warm sounding sub? It has an Aluminum cone... not paper. If your sub is lacking punch i think it has more to do with the design than cone material...

I still stand by the fact that the Solo is not a small box driver.... Even Polecat will admit that. He works for Kicker and he has stated many times that the L7 is not a small box sub like the round ones were.... care to argue? CALL THE COMPANY!!!! They will tell you.... The specs are not that misleading. Kicker recommends 6 cubes for the .707 box for the 15 that is not small..... the 15" Uber woofer that i am having built does a .707 in a 1.2 cube sealed.... That is small.

I gotta agree with RTH here. Dave seems to keep thinking that his opinions are "hard facts".
