HELP trying to install fog lights.
HELP trying to install fog lights.
Here is the deal. I have some foglights that came stock on the 96-97 Firehawks. I got them off ebay and they came with no instructions or anything. I also have a stock foglight switch that is like the ones on trans ams. Now, how in the hell do I wire these lights and the switch up??? Any wiring diagram or anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Re: HELP trying to install fog lights.
Did you ever figure this out? I have a 98 Camaro Z28 and just bought some stock fog lamps and a stock switch. There is a plug in my dash for the switch, but my car didn't come with fog lights so I assume I'm missing some stuff elsewhere. Anyone out there ever try to add stock fog lights to a Z28 that didn't come with them? Any help appreciated...
Re: HELP trying to install fog lights.
no i never figured it out. still have the fog lights and switch sitting in my garage. behind the light switch there is a plug that will fit the fog light switch but so far I have not found any plugs that would work on the fog lights in front of the car.
Re: HELP trying to install fog lights.
i can try and make up a diagram for you guys but i would just as soon run all new wiring and stuff, u will prly need the plug that fits the back of the fogs as well
Re: HELP trying to install fog lights.
I did the same thing. I bought some OEM foglights for my 98 Z28. I got the switch also. But I seem to have no built-in wiring harness wires that go to the fogs. I also have no fuse/relay connectons in the fuse/relay box under the hood. Thus, I couldn't add a fuse or relay for it if I wanted.
The switch probably isn't rated high enough to run the current straight through it. So we will need to add a seperate relay and fuse.
Wiring should be pretty easy.
1. Just wire up the fog-lights straight to the positive auxilary battery terminal on drivers side under the hood. Use a proper fuse (30A ?) and a 12v relay (Can be had at Radio shack). Each of the fogs has two connectors. One will just go to ground and the other to power. Just run the power wire to the relay, then the fuse and then direct to the positive auxilary terminal on drivers side (or directly to the positive battery terminal.) The fog lights will be off till you power the relay. This is the easy part. Now you have to find a way to turn the relay on/off.
2. Run a wire from the switch to the relay to turn it on/off. I just mapped out the original switch:
1-Light Brown
2-Black_________5-Light Brown
3-Light Green____4-Yellow
Back of switch. 6 pin connector with top right pin missing.
1 and 2 go to the high beams indicator bulb in the switch (my bulbs fried).
1 is power-in when lights are on in any way (Interior, driving lights, headlights, brights) I assume 2 goes to ground. This just lights up the bulb indicating any lights are on.
3 and 4 go to the fog-light indicator bulb in the switch.
4 goes to second on/off contact, closest to edge of switch.
5 goes to first on/off contact, closest to bulb.
It is power in. It has power when car is turned on.
So, and I haven't done this, I assume the best way is to use one of those little splicer connectors and tap into the Yellow wire. This is pin 4 and should be power out once you throw the switch to turn on the fogs. Run a wire to your relay to turn the relay on/off.
My reasoning is this:
If power comes in on pin 5 and goes to the first contact, then when you throw the switch it will connect to the second contact and thus go out pin 4 (the actual switch is just a contact bar that lies across the first and second contacts). This lights up the fog bulb and also sends the power out pin 4, which you've just spliced into and sent to the relay. The relay should now turn on/off with the switch.
Just my two cents, and worth what you paid. Don't blame me if you blow up or fry your car!
P.S. You can get the plugs for the fog lights at rockauto.com. They have just about every plug you could think of, for just about any vehical also. Look to pay about $10 each.

Re: HELP trying to install fog lights.
thanks. i have a plug that will work for the foglight switch and im going to search for some plugs that will work for the foglights. i was thinking and i doubt GM would use two different wiring harnesses for the Trans Am and Firebird. I mean, if it already has the plug in the dash for the foglight switch, shouldn't there be some for the foglights as well???

On the upside, We can run fogs with the high-beams on, and I don't think OEM cars can do that.
