Help Quick! Key resistor problems!

I need to disable my vats with the resistor from radio shack. I measured the key pellet with a multimeter and it read 4.482. what does that mean? The resistors at radio shack are all in ohms! HELP! Thanks,
Gregg

The resistance you measured was 4.4 on the Kilohms scale. That means you need something within 10% of 4400 ohms. The nominal rating for the resistor you are looking for is 4700 or 4.7K ohms. The color code for the resister your looking for is yellow, violet, red. The last color band is not important.

But on shoeboxs webpage there is no 4400ohm pellet. http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#pass_key What the heck? What do I buy?

You meter may not be accurate or perhaps you did not make good contact when taking the reading. Looks closer to #11 than #10, so I would get something in the range of the low/high reading of #11. You may need to get a combination of resistors anyway, so get what you need to accomodate both.

I actually tried it 5 different times. Everything was clean and good batteries in the meter. It read 4.428 every time.

Well, as I said, get enough resistors to cover a couple options and/or to meet exactly what you have.

I have bypassed VATS on my Z28 and T/A, the Z28 was easy, one 1.5k-Ohm resistor did the trick. The T/A was a bit harder, had to solder 4 resistors together to get the correct value I used one 3.3k Ohm, one 2.2k Ohm, one 1k-Ohm, and one 1.5k Ohm. Soldered them all together and also used heat shrink on the solder fittings for extra insurance, worked great.

Ok Slopok I bought a 4700ohm resistor. Well see what happens. I am tired of closing my eyes and praying when I turn the key

I understand you still have the problem. Did you place the resistor in the correct connector????? I've seen people unplug the orange wrapped wires and put the resistor in the connector that goes up the steering column. DUH it needs to go in the connector going to the PCM.

Just curious.

Also power needs to be cycled to reset the security light.

The security light only comes on now and then. The harness I am plugging it into has female receptors not male connections. Is that backward?

Since it does go off, you must be in the right side. Sounds like you have a connection problem either at the resistor or at the PCM. I did the resistor over a year ago like you did by pushing it in the connector and taped it up and haven't had a problem since. It's got to be a connection problem.

OK I went to the GM garage and they said my key is a #11. Which is a 4750 ohm resistor. Now, even though my key actually measured 4428 ohms should a try to make the resistors from radio shack total 4700? Thanks everyone!

Earlier, you said you had bought a 4700 ohm resistor. Did you try it? I suggested the #11 earlier in the thread.
