Head units...

Doesn't anyone make DIN-and-a-half anymore? There are probably more than a million cars on the road with DIN-and-a-half openings, but the only head units for sale are either single-DIN or double-DIN.

Double won't fit my Camaro (without more modification than I'd like to do), and single looks like *** IMO.

At one point in the past, Pioneer sold a special din-and-a-half head unit that was designed to look like factory original equipment. It appears that they don't make it any more, and it was lackluster compared to its competition anyway.

I want a head unit that matches what I can get in a modern car for functionality. XM radio, HD radio, FM radio, direct iPod control via USB (with charging), CD player, Bluetooth phone integration with voice control, steering wheel control integration, radio data, CD Text, and I don't want it to look cobbled in the dash.

If this isn't too much to ask, what product offers it?

And if it is too much to ask, why?

I've looked for a modern 1.5 din, and came to the conclusion there isn't one. I guess I'll have to go with a single din when I get around to buying one.

I'm glad you like it -- but that sticks out like a sore thumb. I want something that looks like it was designed to be there.

Alpine made four 1.5 DIN head units. They can be hard to find. However, they do have some of the features you're looking for through the Ai-Net changer cable...you can run either a CD changer, iPod, or satelite radio, but you have to pick ONE. Text on CD's is possible, but for only like 150 CD's. The iPod interface and satelite radio interface only send the audio signal through the HU, but you still have to control the iPod or XM or whatever, through the actual product. Considering Alpine stopped making 1.5 DIN's around 2002, that's about the best you're going to get. Here's mine:

Thanks for the info. That really doesn't look like it belongs there any more than the single-DIN unit does.

I may have to suck it up and get a single-DIN, but I really don't want to.

I want something that can control the iPod and change XM stations from my steering wheel controls. I want it to show artists and song titles (from both iPod and XM, as well as RDS when available) on the display, too.

I'm having the same thoughts...those were my test fit pics and I still haven't installed it permanently yet...I'm back to the Monsoon CD HU. I've got a completely aftermarket system except for the HU and stock 12 disc changer. In '98, CD HU's couldn't even control the changer, and when the CD HU's finally were able to control the changer in '00, they changed the color from dark grey to black. I bought a black one from '02 that could control a changer, and a grey one from '98 that couldn't and traded the faces so that I now have a perfectly matching CD HU that can control the changer. I use a PAC OEM-1 to get 2 pairs of RCA outs.

The Alpine 1.5 HU's look better to me than the single DIN HU's, but I like the look of my current '02 Monson CD HU w/'98 face better still...I just still can't control my iPod
