Good idea?

I have a friend who wants to get 2 2005 Alpine type-r 12's....(rms 200-500)

Do you think 400 rms to each will get them moving and make them bump pretty good?

I have heard that these can take more than they are rated for, so should he use 400 each or about 550-600 each?

The amp he wants to use is a viper 1200.1(1200x1@1ohm, 800x1@2ohms)

And all this will be going into a 1996 camaro with a stock electrical system...

What would be his best choice?

Re: Good idea?

Power handeling is box dependent.

Though since it's going in a Camaro I would think the box wouldn't be that big. These are pretty power hungry subs, run them at 1 ohm and give them each 600WRMS.

Re: Good idea?

We did a 2002 WS6 at my work, and basically ended up building him fiberglass stealthboxes.

The enclosures were extremely small, and we only went with the MRDM-605. It got quite loud, and we were surprised.

The only thing I can say about the new Type R's is that they have a tremendous amount of mechanical noise that would bother me right away. I would look into something like a JL W3v2, IDQ, or Diamond D3. They all work well in smaller boxes, probobly will require less power to get a lot of output out of, and will sound a lot cleaner than the Type R's.

To be honest, I think Alpine screwed up in 2005 between subs with incredible noise, decks that fail and cheaping out on their speaker lines.

Re: Good idea?

The R's will move but under powering the subs can shorten the life/ ruin the subs.
Your friend could go with the type E's (250wrms -750w peak) or the The S's (300wrms - 900w peak).

Re: Good idea?

Out of the entire Alpine lineup, the Type S's are a way better value. They are much cleaner than the Type R's, and have almost the same excursion capability. You should get very similar numbers with a pair of Type S's.

Only thing is they had a problem with the spider mounting ring becoming unglued from the basket, but I believe that is no longer an issue.
