Fusable Links to Engine Ground issues

Ok this doesn't relate to my z28, this relates to my DD 85 Corrolla, exactly a year ago I was driving out my nieghbor hood had my blinker going and as soon as the turn signal turns off all of my electrical except the engine shuts off, i'm talking head lights, dash lighs, radio, a/c, door light, cooling fan. So i take it to shop and and guy says I blew a fusable link which was and engine ground from the battery, and just recently it acted up again. Now what would cause this to happen?
