Front and rear components?
Actually, to get the absolute best soundstage, you should have either nothing in the rear at all OR a pair of simple mid-range speakers. Avoid co or tri-axil speakers. The tweeter on them is what does the damage. Those high frequencies are very directional. You will be able to pinpoint that the music coming from the rear. The idea is to have a solid frontstage (where you are) and to compliment it with a little "rear fill". If you can actually hear the music coming from the rear... it's too much. The new Koda midrange from Adire Audio is suppose to have superb off-axis abilities. Which mean its sound great in stock locations. Check em' out at www.adireaudio.com They are about $150/ pair I think....
I am also looking at the Koda component set, and from the reports i have heard they just dominated the Morel WR8 in the midbass region. That just shouldn't happen to a very high end 8 compared to a 6.5".
I have to agree, keep the speakers up front unless you are running a DVD system and need the surround sound.

you really don't need a rear stage let alone components in the rear. But I do run them in mine because of my DVD setup. After listening to my car for a few weeks now w/o a rear stage, I know now that I really don't need components for my rear stage. I could have used a coax. So my final suggestion is unless you are going for a surround sound setup, I would concentrate my money on a good set of front stage components.

Do what I'm doing I'm running, Mb quart's QSD 316 up front, and in the rear im running something similar to seperates: infinity kappa 4x6 plates. these speakers sound great! they are pretty much a 4x6 plate with the tweeter and woofer mounted seperately. They sound great, for Dvd, very clear loud, and a clean mid bass, and they do not reveal their location. If imaging is what you are most worried about, set your radio with the fader to the front, say +2 +4, this is what i do, and leave the kappas for rear fill, and when i pop in a dvd i have them back their for a clean solid backstage.
If you ask me i think polk/momo put all their money on cosmetics, and left out sound quality and clarity. A boy of mines had them in his car, and for the money he paid 240+ I was not impressed at all. They played pretty loud but the voice sounded flat, and dead. and he had his setting on the HU correct. They do look sweet as hell though. if your looking for a set of good good components, I would go mb. If mb is a too expensive route, get some jl's, infinity kappa or reference, the latter better for the price, kenwoods, or audiobahn also has some nice component sys, that will make your ears bleed, especially audiobahn, but you gonna need a seperate amp for those. they are high power speakers like mostly everything audiobahn.
Get some front components, see how you like it, then get the midranges. I wouldn't put components behind you unless you are going to run a dvd player with dolby digital or something.
Right now i have some focal K2's in the front, sounds excellent, then i plan on adding some midranges to use the rest of my 4 channel.

on reply to the orginal question, if you are strictly competing(sp) then don't get any real fill, if you are just listening to the system regularly and sometimes carry passengers then get some rear fill to keep back seat passengers happy. by the way where to live in LA, i live outside of new orleans, and have all JL Audio speakers and amps.
