Flush mount Head Unit

Has anyone ever flush mounted their headunit so it is even with the dash? I really hate how it sticks out now, not to mention it occasionally gets in the way when I shift.

Any information or install guides would be appreciated.

Thanks

Just make a new face plate. I just made a new one last night out of plexiglass, I'm going to finish it up with paint and some vents. I raised the hole up so it clears that little plastic tab in the dash. It's not hard to make one.

I made my own flush kit with a piece of 1/8" 6061 Aluminum. Cut it all out, sanded it, and polished it up. It turned out pretty darn good for a first shot.

Yes they do!
Copied from ls1.com FAQ thread:

The following are Metra install kits:

40-GM10 - Gm factory antenna to aftermarket head unit

99-4544 - '82 and UP GM multi-kit with 1/2 DIN EQ option

99-3300 - Chevy/Olds/Pontiac 1994 and UP dash kit (flush)

99-3009 - Camaro/Firebird 1993 and UP dash kit (flush)

Best Kits is a Metra alternative (little better quality too):

BAA4 - GM Antenna adapter

BHA1858 - 1997-2001 Wiring Harness

BKGMK432, - 1997-2001 generic dash kits for F-body
BKGM4
BKGM8 - 1997-2001 Camaro specific kit
BKGM9 - 1993-2001 Firebird specific kit

BKSAC656 - 1993-2001 Firebird speaker adapter

Best Kits also has link for adding CD changers, etc.

They make flush kits, but depending on how deep your reciever is, you may end up using the 1/2 inch attachment. In the opening, there is a plastic tab that blocks the HU from reaching all the way in. IF that's the case, a new one is not hard to make. I'm just having trouble making mine connect . Hopefully some hot glue will do the trick

Cut the tab off....
It won't interfere with anything? If that's the case than I'm putting the kit back on.

Dang, just when I got the custom faceplate on

i just flush mounted my headunit in my 88 camaro. i used a ford K630 (i think??) kit. i broke off all of the mounting tabs and used the gm brackets and drilled holes in the ford kit and mounted the gm brackets on that kit. i dont know about the 4th gens but in my car you cant flush mount it unless you cut out the heating vents that come out of the side of the console because there wont be enough room to fit the head unit, thats why they make that ugly kit that sticks out an inch.

I broke the tab off yesterday, and put in the flat dash plate. Now my radio looks great, no ugly protrusions.

By the way, I got a Pioneer DEH-P7400MP

Hey thanks.

By the way, I used the Metra Dash Kit, pulling the tab down is real easy, if anyone wants instructions, PM me.

Alpine Type-R components and an Alpine amp are coming within the month.
