factory 12 disc installation

i just accuired a factory 12 disc changer from a friend of mine. The unit is good, almost brand new. has the magazine, cable, and mounting brackets. my question is this:

Do i already have the wires run for a disc changer? and are there already holes for the brackets? I would like to avoid ripping the interior apart, and drilling holes in the metal.

Your car should already be wired with a changer control harness. The plug that connects to the changer should be located in the back on the driver's side of the car. It is part of the wiring that goes to the hatch area speaker on that side of the car. It should be a flat connector wrapped in foam.

awesome. i was hoping so. i wasnt looking forard to running all the wires. but at least i have them if i have to.

What about mounting the disc changer? I dont want to drill holes through the body. but i saw there was a plastic peice under the carpet. Does it mount to that? or any other ideas?

The mounting bracket goes under the carpet, and attaches to the floorpan. It is a piece of flat metal about 12" long, with a bolt and nut at one end. You can buy it from your dealer, and costs less than $10. I bought one, and secured it to my floorpan with some JB Cold Weld stuff (because I didnt want to weld it, or drill any holes). Its been there for 2+ years, no problems. The wiring for the changer is most likely up under the plastic trim piece on the drivers side at the back under the hatch, wrapped up in some foamy tape.

i have 2 side brakets taht mount to the changer. Are those the brackest you are talking about, or is there another one that goes under it? If so, does anyone know the part number? Do i have to cut the carpet?

Cold weld is a good idea, ill try that instead of drilling holes.

Re: factory 12 disc installation

The bracket I'm talking about is attached to the car itself, not part of the changer. As I described it, its a piece of metal, about 12" long, and about 1/2" wide, with a bolt at the end of it. Just ask at the dealership, they will have the schematic on their computer for the CD changer, with the bracket shown. I ordered it, and it cost less than $10. You might be able to find it at a wrecker, but would probably damage it getting it off the wreck (its actually welded to the floorpan, from the factory). In the OEM setup, the bracket is hidden under the carpet, with only the end (with the bolt & nut) poking up. The changer bolts to the bracket, and is secured with that bolt & nut. Sorry I cant post a picture of the bracket, I'm not that technologically skilled!

No, sorry. I just went into the dealership, asked the parts guy for the bracket, he looked it up on his computer (I confirmed what part I wanted by looking at the schematic). Took about a week to come in, and cost less than $10.

I used two of the long brackets and screwed them down.
My wire was taped to a wiring harness inside the LH fender.

Re: factory 12 disc installation

Yes, thats it, #23. It might also be an idea to buy an extra CD magazine, just in case the original gets broken. I've been discovering that more & more parts for our cars are being discontinued by GM. As the cars age, this problem will only continue to get worse. Anyway, the wiring to connect the changer should be tucked up next to the left rear fender. Just connect it up, and you should be good to go. Good luck.
