dual 2-ohm or dual 4-ohm subs??

i was just curious how you should pick between the dual 2 and 4 ohm subs?? i will be running 2 twelve inch subs. is it just if you want to wire it at 1 or 4 ohms, get the dual 4 ohm subs and if you want to wire it in 2 ohms get the 2 ohm version?

Re: dual 2-ohm or dual 4-ohm subs??

The subs you choose depends on the amp that will be driving them. If your amp can handle a 2ohm load then you would want subs with dual 2ohm voice coils. For this setup you would wire the VC's of each sub in series to make each sub 4ohms. You would then wire the subs together in parallel for a final 2ohm load. If your amp can only handle a 4ohm load then you would want subs with dual 4ohm VC's. You would wire the sub's VC's in series to make each sub 8ohms. You would then wire the subs together in parallel for your final 4ohm load.

If you wanted to run that amp into a 1ohm load you would want to use subs with dual 4ohm VC's. You would wire the VC's in parallel making each sub 2ohms and then connect the subs in parallel for a final 1ohm load.

Re: dual 2-ohm or dual 4-ohm subs??

As LS1 RULZ says, it all depends on which ampyou use and how you use it. If you go to www.crutchfield.com, they have a lot of literature on things like this. It also depends on how you use the amp(ie bridged). The dual voice coils give you flexability which is why I chose them. The amp I am driving my subs with is a 4 channel(bridged to 2ch) which I plan on using to drive my speakers later and get a new amp to drive subs. For this reason I went to the dual voice coils vs. single coils for flexibility. As far as the dual 2 vs dual 4, pick your amp first and go from there.
