Does my car have a factory alarm?

I have a 1996 z28 A4. It did not come with a remote from the previous owner. When I lock the door with the door switch, it hesitates then locks. But when I open the door with the key the horn honks. I have to manualy lock each door so when I open it with the key, the horn doesnt honk. Also when the doors are locked via switch and you kit the car the hork honks and on the passenger side where the seat belt bolts to the body in the trunk area there is a factory shock senosor with a shock adjustment. It sound to me like it does have a factory alarm, but I thought those were not available until 1997. If I were to buy a replacment remote, what would it look like and how would I program it. I looked on ebay and they list several types of remotes for a 1996. I just want to be sure I have an alarm and what remote to buy before I spend the cash to buy one and find out its the wrong one. Thanks!

Sounds like you have an alarm. You can go to the dealer and give them your VIN and they will look up your build sheet. The RPO code will tell you as well, but I forget which one it is. I bought a brand new GM remote from the dealer and it was like $70. The part number is 16245100, and it looks like this:

Actually those remotes are for 97+ IIRC. The older ones were more square.

Both my old ones looked exactly like that. And I read that part number off the one in my hand, so I know it's correct.

Oh, I know my 95 looked like this, so I imagined they changed them with the new interior, but according to this site they were changed in 96.

The interior changed in 97. Since the OP has a 96, the part # I have him will work.

The other one looks like it might be for cars with no alarm, since there is no panic button. The alarm and remote door locks are two different systems. 30AnniversaryZ28, do you have an alarm on yours? I'm curious about this.

The FCC id number is all you have to worry about...The pictured replacement remote may work on a '96. The original '96 remote has a picture of the trunk instead of rear2x, but functionally both will work due to the id number.
