Do I need dual 2 ohm or dual 4ohm subs?

Im going to buy 2 alpine 12" type R subs, Im going to use either the JBL 1200.1 amp or my MTX 302 2 channel amp. Should I buy the 2 or 4 ohm version of the alpines? Thanks

It depends on what final impedance you want to run. If your amp will handle a 2 ohm load it will be louder, if it won't you have to go with a total 4 ohm load. Two 2 ohm dual voice coils can be wired to get 2 ohms. The same 4 ohm speakers would be wired for 4 ohm.

Make sure you know how to wire them to get the correct load. Each 2 ohm speaker would have to be wired in parrallel then wired in series with the other speaker to get a total 2 ohm load.

If you go with the JBL 1200.1 you can run it down to either a 1 or 2 ohm load. Pretty nice actually.

With the MTX 302, I'm assuming it's only good down to 4 ohm bridged mono.

So, if you went with the JLB 1200.1 you could buy either the dual 2 ohm versions of the subs or the dual 4 ohm versions, the only difference will be in how you wire them up.

If you use the MTX 302 and it's only stable down to a 4 ohm mono load then you'd want to get the dual 4 ohm subs.

With that said, it seems like you have the MTX 302 already. Get the dual 4 ohm version of the subs and you can present the MTX 302 with a 4 ohm load if you wire it up correctly. If you plan on getting the JBL amp in the future then you can wire those 4 ohm subs on down to a 1 ohm load and the JBL 1200.1 would work on them.

Ted

PS - For details on how to wire them up just ask, I need to go and so something at work now otherwise I'd type it up for you.

Like Ted already said, get the dual 4 ohm version. If you decide on the MTX, wire the coils together in parallel and then wire the subs together in series. 4 ohm load. If you decide on the JBL, wire the coils in parallel and then wire the woofers in parallel. 1 ohm load.
