Designing custom digital dash, have questions...

Okay, I've got a 93 Camaro Z28, and I'm designing a digital replacement gauge cluster from individual gauges. The Speedo and Tach and Boost will be Nordskog, while all the other gauges will be Cyberdyne. I've got the template drawn out, and I can easily fit 6 gauges in the cluster. I'm having a local guy cut a stainless steel mounting plate in the shape of the gauge cluster. Everything looks fantastic on paper, however, we all know that a good idea on paper doesn't necessarily mean a good idea in the real world. My question is, how hard will this be to wire up? How do I figure out which wire goes to what in the cluster wiring harness? Should a project like this be as simple as connecting the wires to the sending units and gauges? Or am I looking at something more complex than that...???

you will most likely have to purchase new sender units.. one for each of your gauges. example... if your installing a temperature gauge you'll need to install a new temperature sending unit.
same with fuel level.. you will most likely need a new sending unit.

might get lucky on the speedo wire and also the tach.. then finding the blinkers will be simple..

i recently did something similar to my el camino.. just plan on replacing everything.

I figured I would. Besides having to replace everything, how difficult was the project overall??

The fuel-level sensor you shouldn't have to replace, but the rest of the gauges should come with sensors.

As for how hard is it? Get a copy of the wiring diagram for the cluster, and that will tell u the pin-out for the dash. Then you can wire it up from there for power, back-lighting, sensors, idiot lights, etc.

I think I'm going to be doing an autometer one soon myself. The only part I'm struggling with partially is figuring out a mating connector for where the cluster plugs into because I don't want to have to cut wires if I don't have too.

If you are using a computer, you will probably need to run both the old and new senders as the old senders may feed the computer..ask cyberdyne... chances are they've been down this road, you may only need some type of an interface unit to be able to run the stock senders (provided they were for gauges).

71 Camaro, roller cam 454 LS6, tremec TKO 600, 2.56 gears, berlineta t-top, New Mexico plate "RAT454"

That's a good idea. I never thought of simplifying the wiring by running it all through a connector. I'll have to work that into my plan. Where would I find a copy of the wiring diagram for the gauge cluster? Is that in the Haynes/Chiltons manuals?

I don't think it's in those manuals, e-mail shoebox, I think he's got all the factory manuals in electronic format. It'll be in the GM master books, I doubt anywheres else.
