Question Decent amp, sub & box combo?

This will NOT be for my Camaro. These items will be going into my SC2. The car is NOT a hatch, btw.

Right now, I have Infinity Kappa 62.5i speakers up front and will be putting those in the rear as well.

I don't want to spend a fortune, but I don't want crap either.
Something that will hit fairly well will suffice. I'm not trying to rattle the car apart.

Would it be best to go one 12" or two 10"s?

one twelve....

and if you want to save a little money just leave out the rear speakers. 95% of the time it improves the system by leaving them out.

One 12. You could port it if you had the extra room.

IMO, I sometimes disagree. But in a car with a trunk, I agree fully. How much you looking to spend on just the woofers alone? You building the box yourself? Thought of an amp yet? How much you planning on spending for the amp? For a cheap single 12".... I recommend www.edesignaudio.com Check out the K-series.

Looking to spend no more than $150 on the sub(s)
Not building the box myself.
No idea on what amp to get
Looking to spend under $200 for the amp

A friend of mine has a Jensen amp & 2 MTX Thunderform 4000 10" subs already in a box for sale. $300 for all of it. What do you guys think of that?

Honestly, I would pass on all that stuff. Don't feel obligated to buy your friend's stuff. All of it together probably isn't worth 300 anyhow.

Jensen amps are awful. Thunder 4000s aren't that great at all either. I guarantee, if you follow the recommendations by the guys in this thread, you will be 100% happier with the end result.

With that said, what kind of music do you listen to? Sealed boxes are excellent for rock music. And ported enclosures are best for rap and hip hop. There is another type called a bandpass box. They totally slam, but don't have the best sq. Manly for rap.

All you need is one 12 in either of these types of boxes based on your listening preference. Check out jbl amps. I'm sure they have one in budget with the power you're looking for. Way better than any overrated jensen amp.

Are the kicker amps better than the jbl?
I know I've seen a kicker amp on ikesound.com for under $200 before

Kicker amps are good. And I haven't kept up on pricing. But I think if you compared an equally priced Kicker amp and JBL amp, the JBL is gonna have more power. The jbl is the best watt per dollar line I've seen lately. The e12k with 600 watts will kick some booty

The JBL amp are a tad cheaper, but they really lack features. I second the EDK sub. Slomofo has built you a good package for the money.

the only equally priced kicker i see has half the power of the jbl, and quality wise id say they are very similar, as ive used both companies.

you wont be sorry with the jbl 600, esp for that price.

btw, ive ordered from ikesound.com twice with no problems. great deals.

JBL BP600.1 $185 for 600WRMS with a LP crossover, 0-6db bass boost, rated to 1 ohm. 2x30amp fuses. I'm told it draws 114amps max.
Kicker KX600.1 $258 for 600WRMS with a LP crossover, subsonic filter, 0-18bd REMOTE bass boost, rated to 2 ohms, 60 amp fuse. Not sure on max current draw.

You'll be happy with either one.

If you want more bass, go with 2 12's...if you listen to more rock...I'd say go with 10's.....

The only thing you gain from going with a bigger sub is, a bigger sub will be able to hit a few Hz lower than a smaller sub. I have a 10" Eclipse that would rival most 12" subs.

The bottom line is how much RMS (contunious) power the sub can handle. My Eclipse 10" can handle 500 watts RMS (1000 peak).

Also, don't buy a cheap amp. Dirty power will blow a sub quicker than too much power. I would recomend a Fosgate amp if you want a good amp at a resonable price.
