DC 12v Outlet Wiring

Hey I picked up an addition dc 12v outlet from autozone with a socket on one end and bare wires on the other. I plan on tapping the wires into the wires that go to the existing 12v socket next to the e-brake or the on like in front of the shifter. But i was wondering if it mattered if i was tapping into the wires, if there was anything else i needed to do, and if I needed to match up the postive and negative terminals or if it didnt matter. The socket needs to be remote mounted so one of those 1 to 4 outlet things is out of the question. Its for a escort 8500 x50 detector if that make any difference, like I'm hoping it has an automatic voltage switcher built in.

If you don't know whether it makes a difference which way the wires go I suggest you let someone else do the installation.
